We finally bought a cat

Some of you might have seen me mention negotiating on a cat on other threads. It is finally official! We own a 1993 lagoon 42 tpi!
We bought it on lake Ontario, in port whitby. So if you are around, come by for a visit.
It needs some work, but mostly cosmetic. Also in water work only. The hulls and everything under the water line are in great shape.
The price was fair, and if anything, was in our favour. We are now in the process of inventory , cleaning, outfitting household stuff, and settling in. It will be a longish prospect.
But an enjoyable one. There is fair going on close by and some Johnny cash is floating through the air. So I'm going to have a rum!
Cheers everyone

Re: We finally bought a cat

CONGRATULATIONS!!! We did similar last year (2008 Lagoon 420) and these are awesome boats. Lot of hard work and some expenditure but nothing more than we anticipated. I was initially a little overwhelmed by the boat (big step up from a 1978 31"Westerly Berwick which was in great shape and great boat) but now we are really enjoying "Mary Doll". Hope you have great times...

Thanks, we hope to sail south through oswego this fall. Down to he Chesapeake for the boat show and to wait out hurricane season. After that south if we are cold, maybe over to Bahamas.
But if the boat or we aren't ready, haul out here for the winter and go next summer.
Obviously I'd rather stick with plan a, but I won't force it.
And yes, we are retired. We just have some stuff to finish up this summer with the kids, and liquidating possessions.
We took it out for our first sail yesterday. Everything worked, well mostly. I found out what happens to autopilot when you store metal tools next to the compass(thanks Cf, I remembered a thread about that)
We have done a lot of cleaning, sorting, and organizing. It is becoming ours, and I have been sleeping better than I can ever remember.

Re: We finally bought a cat

Great boat, I own the smaller one. Fix hatch leaks, repair soft spots in the deck with Git-Rot (I fixed mine from below), Make sure bottom is sealed up with epoxy barrier. Learn how to use a multimeter for electrical. Lubricate thruhull valves. Expect all toilet drain hoses to be filled with salt. All diesels need clean fuel. Clean fuel tanks by removing them. Add inspection plates in fuel tanks to clean around baffles. Make sure tanks are completely clean. Use Powerservice fuel additives. Especialy Bio Kleen. Make sure Racors are not sucking air. You can make new hatch lenses from 1/4" acryllic with a laminate trimmer. Make sure all big windows are completely sealed and resealed. They will leak!
Get a hard top bimini, therefore you won't kill your self trying to zip up the mainsail cover in a blow. That is about it for right now.
The same Portuguese guys that built my boat built yours. I talked to one of them in Sarasota years past. They did a great job.

I am sorry, thought you were on salt water, drains may be fine from the heads.

Re: We finally bought a cat

Sorry to be so long but........ Buy seconds on all autopilot gear. We have a complete back up system including ram and computer. Make sure the blocks on your steering gear are solid, they tend to get loose and wear out fiberglass(core). Have seconds on all pumps on boat (a/c, house, macerator, shower sumps, etc.). Atleast have rebuild kits. Lots of racor fuel filters. Have back up impellor pump for rough sea replacement and anodes for engines. Make sure motor mounts lag bolts are not stripped. That should keep you busy for a while.
BTW, there is a TPI Lagoon facebook page.

Feel free to ask any questions on the facebook. Rick and group are very helpful. Welcome to the family. You will find all of us love our boats. They are excellent built boats and the hulls will not fail you. It is all the little stuff attached to them that will keep you busy.
