Vang on a Lagoon 400 S2?

Hello friends,

I used the search function for “vang”, but didn’t come up with the answers I was looking for... Has anyone ever installed a vang on a Lagoon 380-410-420-440-450 etc? We have a 400-S2 with square top main and I’m considering installing a vang.

Why?

11. On our East to West translant we often had the main out as far as possible (until the upper couple of battens were touching the cap shrouds). Even with the main travelled down and a preventer from the end of the boom to the aft cleat hauled tight (further pulling the boom down) the main didn’t look like it was pulling its weight. My hope is that a vang would allow me to ease the boom further outboard, but still be able to control the top of the sail with the vang.
22. The right vang design could act as a backup for the lazy jacks in case the topping lift was accidently released. Think about that next time you ask a guest to handle your halyards….

I’m thinking about this product which may address both issues:

Boom Vang Yacht Rod 55' Boats

Now the questions:

11. Would it work?
22. I assume the mast will be strong enough, but how about the boom?
33. Is it worth the money? Probably about $3000 US for the vang and fittings.
44. Should I stop obsessing about the last bit of boat speed and have another beer instead?

Cheers,

Bill

Yeah Bill, time for a beer personally I don't think a vang would make much difference to the shape you can get using the preventer. The shrouds will always touch too soon for a great sail shape. Also the boom would need some serious re engineering. I'd suggest put the $$ toward a parasailor, drop the main downwind and enjoy the beers

Re: Vang on a Lagoon 400 S2?

I wanted to install a vang on the boat (L400) during commissioning. Sent a query to Lagoon that forwarded the query to Selden (mast manufacturer). Selden replied negatively even stating that the warranty for the mast and boom will be withdrawn if I will do it on my own.
The main problem seems to be the low height of the boom over cabin top. The vang shoul make 45 deg angles with both spars and on the L400 this will be a very short one and the end on the boom will be close to the mast. Arm too short.

I fitted a vang to our L450 to use with our Leisure Furl. Not at all difficult to do and was about USD1,500. Yep, supports the boom weight fully and from my limited experience seems to provide a bit more control of the sail shape.

See my earlier post above. In L450 the boom is high above cabin top. This allows for proper vang to be installed.
In L400 the arrangement is different.
Anyway - if it can be done I will be happy to copy the installation.
