Replace SD50 with SD60 in L400

Good evening, I would like to hear about potential issues that may arise when removing the Yanmar SD50’s and replacing with Yanmar SD60’s. I have a 2010 L 400 and would like to know if there will be any space issues or constraints with this conversion. Also, if anybody has already done this, what problems did you encounter? I would appreciate any and all information and feedback as I am trying to decide if this is the right thing to do and if it can be done without a major refit. Thanks in advance for your helpful thoughts and information

Re: Replace SD50 with SD60 in L400

Great question. IMO, the SD40 & 50 are only light-duty SDs, not really meant for cruising, given their built-in obsolescence (although you can now upgrade them with a real steel roller-bearing instead of their silly copper thrust-washer, but the kit's $500/side).

I'm afraid I can't shed any light, but I'm also interested. We have a pair of 25yo 4JH2 engines with SD31s, each with 9,000 hours. They still run OK, & I've replaced most of the bearings & seals in the SD31s, but at some point, I'm going to need to upgrade things as well.

Reference

https://www.myhanse.com/yanmar-sd60_...0SD60%20height.

Snipet:

you can retrofit the SD50 for an SD60 however there are a couple of things to note:

- base mounting configuration of the SD60 differs from SD50 so Yanmar sell an adaptor plate to bolt to the bed and then SD60 bolts to that.

- height of SD60 is slightly taller so you need packers under the engine mounts to lift the engine slightly to line up with SD60 height.

Out of interest why are you changing the SD50s out, how many hours on them?

Montanan has it right. Need about 1.5 or 2" clearance at the end of the SD for the adapter plate - needed because the drive/engine mount is different.

Re: Replace SD50 with SD60 in L400

As stated by a previous posted, I too am interested in the reason for changing out SD 50s for SD 60's. I changed out our old SD 50s for 60s on our former Lagoon 410. The only reason I changed out the motors was that we had near 10K on the hour meter and we were offered a sensational deal on the purchase and installation of the new motors which was just to good to say no to.

Re: Replace SD50 with SD60 in L400

Hi I have a 2002 410 and i had sd 60 drives installed. It was a lot of work. Had to fabricate shims to raise the yanmars up to attach to the new gear boxes. But they are doing great no problems at all.
