Not something I need to worry about. I have owned my current sloop for 15 years and it has never been named. Not by me or the former owner(s). I simply refer to her as The Boat.

I think you named her “The Boat” without make it official name. Also, registering a boat will require a name and home port. How do you communicate with USCG or other vessels about your boat in traffic or rescue requests? It could be challenging for the USCG to ask other vessels to look out for “the boat” to provide assistance.

Interesting thought. My boat is registered, of course. I was never asked for a name or port and I have not had to speak to the USCG in over 20 years. I guess "I ride through the ocean on a boat with no name".

I remember very well the ritual handing over of the check to the painter who changed the name on our transom.
