Propane Location

Hello Lagooners,

I have a 2016 Logoon 450F.

Regarding my Magma BBQ, I wanted to move away from the small green camping canisters, and get a larger propane bottle, as we are planning to do some water sailing">blue water sailing and I don't want to have to store a bunch of little green bottles on the vessel.

I keep my BBQ, on the aft, starboard rails (please see photo below).

I have thought of storing the propane bottle in the starboard engine compartment.
Either on the wooden shelf above the engine, or building a stand in the void under the starboard sugar scoop stairs, directly aft of the starboard engine.
This will allow me to run the propane hose through the side wall of the engine compartment and up the support rails to the BBQ.
This way the hose is dressed and looks as clean as possible.

The engines are 57hp, diesel Yanmars.

The questions is:
Is it safe to store a filled propane bottle in the engine compartment?
I prefer not to blow up the boat, as I like her a lot...

Does any one have experience with this?

The normal holding spot for the propane bottle is under the exterior seat in the back salon, directly aft of the galley. There does not seem to be a way to leave the propane bottle there and run a hose from that compartment to the BBQ mounted on the back of the boat.

Does anyone have suggestions for an alternate placement spot for a propane bottle for the BBQ?

-Jimmy

No to the engine room. The problem with propane/LPG is that it is heavier than air, any leak will collect in the bilge. And engine rooms are places with lots of potential ignition sources.

Propane should only be stored in a locker/enclosure that has a bottom drain that goes directly overboard, on cats this is generally somewhere on the bridgedeck.

Agree no to engine room or any locker that does not have a drain to the sea. You could have a line plumbed in by a gas fitter from the main propane tanks. Alternatively and this is what I would do, I would get a smaller stain less steel or fiberglass bottle and make up a bracket to hold it under the BBQ. https://cookout.com.au/product/gas-bottle-holder/

Re: Propane Location

Why not just attach the 10lb propane bottle on the rail near the BBQ. That is what we done for the past 15 years. You can buy an adapter hose.

Can you share a picture of how you attach it to the rail?

I could do that, it just doesn't look clean and professionally installed.

I'm not a fan of just hanging things of the side of the boat.

The engine compartment idea is a looser.

So I want to try to find a way to run the line from the propane storage locker under the seat to the BBQ.

It is a mystery, but we will figure it out.

Re: Propane Location

Yes to all of the above.

Think through your own design for a rack. It should have an anchored ring at the bottom that will take the weight of the bottle. It should have a clamp at the top to secure the bottle against the standard 50 pound force from the side (typically, someone sliding into it feet first). It should be in a position that lets all leaks flow off the boat. Then you need a single gas hose from the regulator to the stove without junctions. Always turn it off at the tank, not the stove. You got it.

If you don't want to got to all that trouble, try one of these, mounted on deck with overboard drain:

Re: Propane Location

Just locate the bottle on the rail there near the BBQ and use an aluminum bottle or one of those composite ones. You can tie it, buy one or make a nice bracket to hold the bottle. You dont need something to put it in. I had a sunbrella cover made for mine.
There are many ways to hold it to the rail, from fabbing your own from wood or Starboard to other ways. Check RV stores for nice aluminum or SS brackets.

Re: Propane Location

Hi there
Our 450 has had the BBQ on the back rail plumbed into the main propane tank in the locker at the front of the cockpit. Im not sure how it was run but it works fine.

Copy that.

I'm sure there is a way to make that happen.
I just need to sort out how to do it...

Thanks!
