Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

Just had my rig inspected on my Lagoon 450. We found a crack at the top of the cap shroud (picture attached). The current plan is to take the stay off and inspect on the dock to see how deep the crack is. However cracks tend to propagate so I am thinking stay replacement.

We have asked the agent to ask Lagoon if covered under the warranty as our yacht is less than 4 years old.

Has anyone else had this problem with a Lagoon catamaran? Have you checked you rig recently? Any suggestions as to what to do?

Cheers, Dave

Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

i am preparing gear to be able to inspect mast periodically. It was 12 mths since last inspection.

If you think it is not too bad but not sure, use dyneema and attach as plan b shroud in case your shroud gives up.

my guess:
as there is more than one crack I think is stress crack and shroud is weaker than it was, so replace is the right course of action.

Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

correct me if I am wrong but the mast and rigging is built and supplied by sparcraft.

sparcraft have a system where by each swaged fitting has an engraved individual unique tracking number on it ,just for this reason,to track rigging failures ,by the age and batch of particular installation.(traceability?)

perhaps it would be a good idea to contact the factory in la rochell, quoting this number and your vessel details.

Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

Thanks, very good info and I will chase it up. They have an NZ agent as well, who is likely to hear from me!

Does this look like something similar. I am hoping not.

Similiar or not, neither would make me happy. Clearly look like cracks. I would refrain from sailing those boats till you get it repaired.

PaulinOZ, When did you find the crack and what action did you take or advice obtained? Dave

Bit difficult currently cruising on Great Barrier Reef. Far North Queensland.

I pointed this out to a Rigger 14 months ago (boat was only 12 months old then) when I was having a Halyard and Aerial installed in Mast. His answer was "only a surface crack, from manufacturing" so I did not worry about it any more, till I had seen your post this morning Dave so now I am wondering if I should be worried or not.
Will follow with interest what happens from here.

Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

No cracks evident here, although wondering whether there may be some fundamental differences in the hardware involved?

C'mon. Clearly your toggles are different. Can't you see?

Look at the slot in the toggle.

Mmm...seems we may be blind...altho we are responding to a thread entitled "Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks" -- We suspect there may be a few L440 owners around CF -- and we did suggest "fundamental differences in the hardware involved" vis-à-vis the OP's situation.

Anyway, our observations are simply FWIW...and we beg indulgence from any who are put out by our lack of expressed expertise...

Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

There aren't any differences, it is the same hardware. My picture was taken at the top of the shroud way up the mast. We found cracks only at the one location all other connections, including at deck level were good.

Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

I replaced my Capstays last year (early 2005 production) due to general age and small cracks in the STBD swage point. No cracks at the eye terminal however.

I'm sure this will be out of warranty - about 3 "boat units" for the job I'd suggest (parts -2.5, labour 0.5).

I would not be leaving it the way it is and I would do both. The intermediate diagonals may be fine at your boat's age. Glad you picked this up.
As for Paul, I'd suggest an early intervention too. If it goes, it will be at the worst possible time.....
