Absolutely.. I made up something very similar using a 16mm Ronstan low friction ring and some simple double braid line. There's very little weight on the friction ring because the angle change is only slight and it works perfectly.

Re: Lagoon 450S Roller Furling Spool Slipping and Jamming

Hello All,

Such fantastic help and advice. I've been sailing now for a few thousand miles further and have been managing this without alteration. What I'm finding is the worst slipping from the drum is actually when I'm sailing downwind, during the first setup the drum stays tight, but then a few jibes or so and the drum begins to rotate and slips.

I think the rig on the striker with shock cord is the way to go. I love the ideas, and absolutely cherish all of the valuable feedback.

Thanks so much,
V

Hello Everyone,

Thanks to all for helping us with what is a critical part of our boat! After numerous attempts and denials by Lagoon (they say this is not an issue for anyone but us!!! so not true , we do have a solution.

A few of you mentioned this, and thanks so much! We've tied a 1/4 inch shock cord to our Dolphin Striker where it meets our lifelines via a bowline. At the other end we tied a bowline as well and passed our roller furling line through this knot which keeps the line fed into the roller furling drum at a horizontal instead of the slight angle downward. This is the perfect solution and now after a few thousand miles we've had no problems.

I wish you all the best, thanks so much for the input and assistance!

Unless I’m missing something above, I’d suggest putting a low friction ring or block at your free end and run the furling line through that. If your furling line is running through a bowline knot it will chafe and break the knot soon!

yup, i agree. i had LFR on bungee but did not like it as risk of rope tangling and pulling on striker was too great. So now i use generous size SS shackle, D shape, removed locking part and bunge goes thru the holes.

Using a shackle as a friction ring is fine, trouble is it is not a "low" friction ring, so eventually the furling line will chafe on the shackle, earlier than if on a ring or a block and a new furling line will be required after the outer case starts to fluff up - could be a while though. Friction rings are cheap around $10 USD.
