Lagoon 450 furling Gennaker

Hi Guys

Just one question

is anybody out there Sailing a Top Down Furling Gennaker on a L 450 ?

If Yes how is it working

We have a Parasailor and a Code 0.

But sometimes a quick furling Gennaker would be perfect for the Windangle behind 100 deg AWS

On the L400 / L440 / L450

the furling code 0 is a Genacker, isn't it?
The jib is a smal Genova in fact.

And what is a top-down furling genacker?, there are in boom furling main sails, but Genacker???

Re: Lagoon 450 furling Gennaker

I've been trying to find a solution to this for a while. I've got a sock for our gennaker now which i think is better cause it's quite a light fabric and the wind would always blow it out when furled.

I'd like something a bit thicker that would furl and stay furled. Like you say, 100awa to 160awa. Or indeed something that could be wing and winged with the genoa.

I've got the Facnor furler but would need the anti torsion wire (very expensive) and the top down adapter here: https://www.upffront.com/facnor-fx-1...p-down-adapter

Might help in some research for you.

Hi Dave,

The solution is getting closer.

1.) Code D from Code-D, le spi qui s\'enroule par Deltavoiles

or

2.) Maybe better from one Sails without a torsion cable

It works just like it does on any other cat that has a spinnaker halyard. L450 or ZZ590. Read it works well.

Top furling is second best system for AWS 100 sails. It is best choice for long luff sails, normally asym and sym spinnakers and G3 style sails.

Note at least two top down can be used with regular 'short' kites with minimum mod only. Available from at least Selden but I bet also Harken, Facnor and Karver.

Cheers,
b.

Very interested in hearing different experiences from furling headsails. Is it worth the money? I am tempted to by a PFR from Onesail but it's twice the price of a gennaker and snuffer.

Congrats, beautiful sail. And nice sail inventory on your boat !

I still don't get the "top down" name. Isn't it just what is usually called a furler ? So you probably use the new code-D on the same furling system as your code-0 don't you ?

Re: Lagoon 450 furling Gennaker

rom; A a traditional furler is a bottom-up furler. It furls the sail by rolling it from the clew(attached to the drum). A top-down furler has the clew attached to a swivel and when furling the leech, attached or not, to a AT(anti tortion) line, furles the sail from the top and down.
Top-down furler can, when modified, be used for code 0. Not the other way around.

Re: Lagoon 450 furling Gennaker

Ah, thanks, got it.

If the sail furls around a sturdy rod top and bottom attached synchronously, its a regular furler, (used for Genacker / Code 0).

If the lower part is detached / loose and only the upper part is attached to the furling rod, the sail furls first around the top and then spins down the rod - than it is then called a top-down furler - mainly used for code D or spinnaker / balloon sails.

Thanks tosk68 but I still don't get it. We both have Lagoons with a genoa and a code-0 (or gennak) right ?
the genoa is on a furler (enrouleur in french) ?
the gennak is on a furler (emmagasineur in french) ?
For both of them there is a swivel on the halyard and a swivel on the "drum". To me they work pretty much the same way, AT is pretty much comparable to the genoa's aluminium tube. So why is one "top down", and the other "bottom up" ??

Re: Lagoon 450 furling Gennaker

Code 0 and Genoa / Jib on the lagoon have both regular furler, no top down furler.

The top down furler can detach the swivel next to the furling drum to allow only the top of the sail to wrap around WITHOUT turning the lower edge. This is meant for downwind balloon sails like a Code D, Spinnaker and the like.

Code 0 is usually furled on a regular furler because of the straight shape of the sail, it is an upwind sail.

i tell you what! This is totally confusing, french thing i guess. So what do I have - It is on furler, 76m2 of carbon sail that I can furl from cockpit ? It pushes boat 10-11 kn in 20 kn app. Can go to 45 app.

Re: Lagoon 450 furling Gennaker

OK guys thank you ! I get it, the bottom of the sail is attached to an additional swivel and the AT is not part of the sail ! Very clever !

Useless for me as I "only" have a sym spi and a code-0 but I will definitely talk to a friend of mine whose asym self deployed at night in a marina...
