440: Lagoon 440 Sailing on a Stormy Day

A stormy day with winds up to 43 knots. Sailing to Datca in Turkey.

The Lagoon 440 handled that wind without any problem. here is a short video of that trip.

Like most cat's it looks like a smooth cruse, but what is tied to the bow ? Were you pinching into the wind and at what deg off the wind?

Did you watch the video till the end? The day started with 25 knots wind and in the late afternoon we have seen 43 knots.

Most of the day it was between 35-40 knots. We call this a storm here.

People not only sail to the conditions of the area, their boats are often set up for them (or even designed for them)

43 knots in the Med where the short seas pick up quickly, and sailed in an unfamiliar boat, is a substantial storm in most peoples thoughts.

43 knots off the sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, as you would well know, can be extremely dangerous as the wind chill factor could have your skin freezing in under a minute if the ambient temperature falls a few degrees below freezing. And that kind of temperature drop would be reasonably normal off pack ice, wouldn't it? I don't know because I haven't sailed there.


I reckon 43 knots anywhere is damn stormy enough for me!

I'm also surprised that the sea doesn't look too bad with such wind.

Not trying to minimize anyones sailing experiences in anyway but it's way too common to use "storm" to describe moderate conditions.

This is how it's officially categorized here..

0-1 mph - rolig, 1-2 mph - lett bris, 4-7 mph - liten bris, 8-12 mph - Lett bris, 13-18 mph - moderat vind, 19-24 mph - frisk bris, 25-31 mph - sterk vind, 32-38 mph - moderat kuling, 39-46 mph - frisk kuling, 47-54 mph - sterk kuling, 55-63 mph - hele kuling, 64-75 mph - vind storm, over 75 mph - orkan

40kn is 46mph or 20m/s

My copy of Frank Beauforts scale suggest that 48 knots is where storm force wind starts. 27 knots is a moderate gale. Which is all pedantry really. What the OP was seeking, in my humble view, to indicate, was that he went for a sail on a day that could be described in our part of the world as "a bit ordinary" and he was comfortable and indeed pleased with the way his boat handled the conditions.

We experienced 48kn winds north of NZ in our L440 with 5M seas at one point 'cat'apulting -- Pardon the pun! -- CatNirvana off of one wave into the back of another, sending a wall of water over the saloon roof and recording 21kn SOG on the GPS under basically only a rag of genoa. Although we always felt CatNirvana was comfortable handling those conditions, we will be VERY happy if we never repeat them!
