That would explain why I did not get any replies to my emails to the seller.

I am hoping to come down on Saturday to have sail on Derek's 410 as ideally I would like a 410, but I put this post on as I was curious about the 42 and her performance compared with the 410, as I would like a cat with the internal volume of a 410, but I would also like to be able to hit double figures (with a bit of tweaking of course) using a gennaker, folding props etc in about 15 - 20 knts of wind (apparent).
I did my Day Skipper and Coast Skipper (practical) on a Prout 38 at the UKSA, a heavy and not well designed (in my opinion - but OK) boat, the young Canadian examiner/assessor managed to get it going at 11 knots (using a code zero) in about 16 knots apparent so if that can do it, what can a Lagoon 410 or 42 do being lighter, bigger sail area and a larger main do, this is what I would like to find out before I make my final descision.

Indeed - seems to take sellers ages to pull boat details from websites, we went down quite a few dead end roads!

When I have time I'll do a proper polar plot of the 42 as I never found one. Side on the 410 and 42 share a very similar profile below the deck line. I'd say the 410 hulls are wider and superstructure windage compared to the 42 is higher (vertical windows etc). That shouldn't hurt you much off the wind though. I think the 42 appears more geared to sailing and you can see the heritage of the 47 and 57. The 410 and newer 420 show a progression towads space and comfort. The 420 markedly so (too much for me!).

If performance is your thing don't forget the Prout 38, Lagoon 42/410 are primarily safe and easy to use cruisers with the compromises that go along with that - none have particularly large sail areas or slender super efficient hulls. But, they're very capable platforms. I'd expect the Lagoons to easily match the Prout performance.

The Lagoons might have larger mains but mainly as a function of the rig layout compared to the Prout (big headsail instead).

Are you down for the whole weekend? Our 42 is stil afloat but should lifted out by next week.

Hi Jstone, I am probably only down for the Saturday, yet to be confirmed, is your 42 on a mooring or in a marina?.
I actually think the 42 or 410 would be a better performer that the Prout.
Yes, I would like a bit of performance but I don't want to go too light and lack a nice comfotable boat, but realise you cant have both unless you have a lot of money and get a one off designed, it would also have to be bigger than 40ft, which I don't really want to go much bigger.
I like the new Outremer 42 but it is very spartan inside but gives the extra performance, but I would forgo the extra performance it offers for more comfort.
Hopefully this explains what I am looking for.

I ran into this thread while doing a Google search. I bought a Lagoon 42 TPI in April 2007 and have been living on it since. It was bought specifically for a one year vacation cruising in the Caribbean. During that time I've learned a lot about the boat, it's strenghts, weaknesses and how it compares to some of the other cats in its range. If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask. Mainsail Area: 694 square feet
Genoa Area: 264 sf
Spinnaker Area: 1400 sf

Got this from a sail maker a while back; confirmed by my physical measurements:

I= 48.1
J= 13.65
P= 49.725
E= 18.85
