ok, here are all the details so you dont have to climb the mast:

i use 6mm home made dyneema better soft shackle. Dont use button knot as this is for clothing buttons only. Go thru both fittings 2x, so end distance between sail and headblock is around 4 cm - as little you can tolerate. Also forces are actually admirable, and doubling it helps. Also makes it even harder to undo when not under tension - never happened.

From observation it twists when needed up to 90 degrees. Never full turn. Before this, i had to untwist halyard often, and if locked, there are twisting forces on top which i did not like at all. Buy good stabilizing binocular so you can observe and prevent chafe. Way cheaper.

We have no swivel, just dyneema lashed the pulley to the head. This means can't use main halyard for bosuns chair easily without undoing the lashing, so I replaced the poly topping lift with 11mm dyneema and use that for the bosuns chair. Also I don't like the idea of bosuns chair that relies on a shackle at the mast top I can't see.

For information, The 2011 Lagoon 450 specification sheet states that the main halyard and genoa halyard are both spectra.

It does seem that the line in the link I shared would be suitable as it has a Spectra core, and the specs of the core indicate low creep, UV resistant, high strength etc - might have been an oversight on the part of the supplier not to have included Halyards in the Application list - I have emailed them to inquire.

The Break load for that line in 12mm is 8400kg's - is that sufficient?

If 67m is required, how many extra metres should I get to allow for movement of the line if/when chafing occurs?

12mm Yale Maxibraid Plus spectra has tensile strength of 20,000 lbs / 9,000 kg so it is in the ball park.


Also when you are aloft have a look at the shackle and hole that attaches to one end of the halyard. The hole may have elongated so you may have to use another hole with a longer rated shackle.

9 tons might be 10 times more than needed. I just met someone who changed his main halyard on a 440 for a 12mm full polyester. I believe the only good reason to go dyneema is lower creep and stretch. I am in the process of changing my mainsail halyard myself, I am going for an affordable dyneema (not to say low cost) 12mm, about 5000 kg strength, less than 5 EUR per meter.

Interesting as our L400 came in 2011 with regular halyard not dyneema. Anyway I believe that 12mm dyneema is much stronger than required. As I mentioned above if clutch and winch can handle thinner line I would consider downgrading to 10mm. Saving money and weight.
We have done that with our reefing lines.

I do not think it is a good idea to use 10mm for halyards in those spinlocks meant for 8 to 16mm. I would be afraid it is going to slip a bit and wear faster.

The 12mm Super Braid we've been offered is double braid line - so a Spectra core with a polyester cover. Spectra and Dyneema being pretty much the same thing. So not sure what the actual diameter of the spectra innards is.

1) did the 67m (220ft) length specified in the manual turn out to be correct?

2) does the end of the halyard require a loop to attach at the top of the mast (have not been up to have a look yet!)?

We ended up getting 70m 12mm Super Braid so we had some extra to be able to cut off later should we need to move chafe points. Unfortunately I can't comment on the top attachment as my skipper installed.

Yes you’ll need an eye splice at one end to attached to the mast top
