Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

If you open the ventilation hatch in the cockpit you can see the port transom clearly from the helm.

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

Hi All and sorry for not being on in a while. It's been full steam ahead and I've got good news... I found someone crazy enough to loan me the money! I didn't want to speak too soon and jinx it but all seems to be going smoothly now and despite a slight delay and me needing to go an earn some money we should be setting sail by the end of June.

I sailed across the English Channel last week and down the coast of France to try and get to Les Sables D'olonne to make our factory visit. I got pretty close but my better half had to come collect me in a hire car and drive the last bit.

The factory visit was great, I'd recommend it to any buyer or prospective buyer. We both loved every minute. There's no cameras allowed inside unfortunately but luckily hull No 60 was just outside so we could go on and have a good look around. Our boat is 95% finished and due to leave the factory at the beginning of June where it will then be transported to the guys to commission it. We met with Yacht Care Services and Robin Marine and now have a good plan to move forward. Both companies were very friendly, helpful and I'm confident we will end up with a good product. I'll try and post a full review once everything is installed but these guys do hundreds of cats per year so I don't think I'm asking for anything they haven't done before.

This thread has so much good advice on so hopefully I'll avoid many of the common issues and the rest will be fun learning along the way.

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

"luckily hull No 60 was outside" was that a L450S?

Congratulations, sounds like it's all happening finally.

Great news Dave, also great that you are working with the guys doing the commissioning as that's something I wish we had the opportunity to do.

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

Hull No 60 is OUR 450s!

They were up to Hull 69S inside the factory and a dozen boats outside with just final snagging to do.

I think they are up 619 now of both S and F and there were 42's everywhere. They seem to be churning those out.

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

There are a couple of changes (developments) to the S since I started planning.

I was going to install handrails from the cockpit up to the helm but these are included now and I'd planned to put 2x solar panels on the roof of the helm Bimini but when I saw it on Thursday there is now a large sun roof in the middle.

Both are obvious improvements so we are happy however we are down to a row of 3x 333w solar panels for the time being. I may look for some long and thin panels that can go either side of the new sun roof at a later date.

Hi Dave, Great to see this coming together. What additional work are you having done by Yacht Care and Robin Marine? Which genset did you decide on and who is fitting it?

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

Thanks for your snagging list John.

Robin Marine:
Solar tower install
Victron bits
Aft hand rail alterations
Pajuro 6500 genset
Sea Recovery watermaker 110/hr
Underwater leds

YCS:
Copper coat or antifoul (I've still not decided)
Step mast etc

When I've got a bit more time, I'll do a detailed description.

Hi Dave
The excitement must REALLY be building
That photo of the bimini had me confused for a couple of seconds until I realised where it was resting on your boat

Nice looking bimini and also interesting to see the continual improvements coming from Lagoon (handrail etc)

Interested to hear your decision on whether to coppercoat or not.

Thanks for the updates

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

1000W of solar is pretty good to say the least! Don't know what your battery bank is but most thoughts are of a ratio of .75 to 1.25 W/Ah. Of course depends upon if the area you are going to be in, is it sunny lots of the time etc., but even if you have 750Ah, 1000W of solar is going to keep you recharged pretty well. I have 500W for 420Ah and during the summer I am always charged. OTH, I am only using about 100-150Ah/day.

What would help your solar more is different locations of the panels. Shading kills the output, so if the boom is over the panel, that hurts. If you have another panel right in front of that shaded panel, it will also be shaded, so not really helping as much as you think. If it was over the davits, that would be different.

Finally for me, if you are coastal cruising, you normally run the engines at least 1x a day getting in and out of harbors. 2 x 85A alt for an hour probably puts in what I take out. On my boat, that is .75gal an hour, so not lots of fuel. If you are crossing the ocean, a different story. Just my 2c.

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

That sun roof is an improvement, the sole reason I didn't take the hard top Bimini was I couldn't see the rig from the helm. Will also copy that hand rail 👍

Re: Just signed on a new 450s!

Regarding solar.
We will have 1000w behind the flybridge and 840Ah LA battery bank. This is a good starting point for sure and supplemented with some alternator charging and generator running which I think we will do often ish anyway will do for now.
