General Info: Inverter by lagoon or aftermarket

Hi everybody,

What do you think when ordering a new Lagoon 40. Choose the inverter option from lagoon? or make it aftermarket?



Curious what you did and why.

Are you talking just the the inverter unit, or doing all the AC wiring too, DIY or professional install?

Just the inverter. AC will be factory option.

Wiring an inverter is pretty straightforward, but any wiring on the boat is just generally a big hassle, and the wires are pretty fat on full power inverters.

The Lagoon factory inverter is, as usual, quite overpriced. Installing an after market inverter is quite doable (we did it) but it is a lot of work.

I installed a victron quattro 5k on my 450. Did every thing my self, its achievable with some tech knowledge athough not a lot required. I did it because the lagoon option was too expensive and not enough Wattage for me.

Things like this never have a single answer for everybody. There are lots of considerations.

Does the inverter supplied by Lagoon meet your needs? If not, install your own.

Will Lagoon warrantee the inverter and its installation? Does that matter to you? One stop shop repairs for a year (or whatever...) can be handy for a new boat owner.

If you will pay someone else to install it, Lagoon might actually be cheaper since they have standardized parts and know how it all goes together without thinking...

If you have the tools (for example, heavy duty lug crimpers) then you are halfway there. If not, there are extra costs to DIY beyond materials.

Is Lagoon custom electrical work up to the standard you want?

I don't have an inverter on my 380, but have looked at putting one on for the past 3 years. I have installed 4 locations that can take 12V or USB plugs, which covers most of the needs. I do have a small 100 watt inverter that plugs into the 12V that I can use for very small needs.

I have looked very seriously about the 2 or 3kw inverter charger from victron, which I would use to replace the cristec OEM charger on the boat. It is very simple to install except for the current wiring going to the instrument panel to turn on the charger and to turn on the AC plugs.

If you can spec an inverter for lagoon to install at a reasonable cost, do it, as doing the wiring after is much harder than after the boat is built. If they could even do the wiring and let you put in the inverter of your choice, that is good as well.

I upgraded the inverter, Lagoon installed a 2kVA Mastervolt MasSine inverter, too small for us, We have now a Victron Quattro 5kVA plus the Mastervolt as spare ot to team up to 7kVA. Another benefit is the 200A charger and the power assist capability to upgrade weak shore power or even the generator when needed

We use a lot of 230V gear along with Lithium batteries and solar.

I would do it aftermarket or DIY and size the system to my needs. I do not like the Mastervolt gear either.

The Victron 12/5000 is really huge - where on the boat did you install it? Any problems with the heat or noise?

Under the aft guest bunk. Heat depends on load and time, no real issues yet. I have installed it over the AC unit using the same airflow openings.

Thank you very much! So your Vectron is on port side. Is it not too far away from your batteries? They are usualy under the owners compartment bunk (sb).

Nope, they are in the port compartment in front of the AC in under the guest bunk. Very short cabling to the Inverter and the MPPT controller.
