Admittedly it is located highish athe the mattress level and well abover the waterline (when properly afloat) but fundamentally rules out the compartment being "air tight". It should be a transparent screw in inspection fitting, not a press fit cap covering a void.

And through where comes the air for the engine to breathe (i.e. mix with the fuel to burn)?

No, it hasn't technically sunk, but every catamaran owner should look at that picture and reconsider their definition of "sunk" as it applies to their abandon ship and survival plans.

Good point. Maybe the life raft should be stowed under/around the gull striker, instead of where it is on most boats - under the back of the cockpit.

Re: Charter Lagoon 440 Takes on water and flips
In an emailed statement to Seychelles News Agency, Mr Durand said his clients explained to the police that they were all at the helm station upstairs when the boat‘s electronics suddenly stopped working, soon followed by the engine.
“The skipper decided to go down and noticed when he entered the boat that it was taking on water… they just grabbed the life jackets and decided to put on the water the dinghy…” read the statement.
The black box charter recorder recorded the following conversation from the bridgedeck
What da hell, the TV stopped showing the map?
Ya, maybe someone should go check the plug downstairs
Da, bring some beer back too
What the hell, now the engines stopped
Bloody French #%^%##%^
Why can't we see the horizon in front anymore ?
Hmmm
Someone get the beer
*footsteps*
Holyfagatehnausubrbehhnschneell schnell schnell!,!
*hurried footsteps*
End of recording...

Hi.
What follows is written in a friendly tone of voice and is a sincere request to clarify your POV, since you have made some statements.
I am not a "hater" of monos or multis. I would have either. I would love to have a Lagoon too.
_______________
My question is to you because of what you wrote up above (see what I bolded). To me, it is not clear whether you mean that a catamaran owner should HAVE or NOT NEED a life raft. Please clarify your POV.

My POV?
I would love to have a Lagoon (or any big cat). But, I will still have an offshore life raft because unexpected bad things (like what is shown in the photo) happen to all kinds of boats. Luckily for this crew (the boat above) they were not far from help.

I've seen it claimed many times (and I believed it myself) that a catamaran will still float if inverted. This is often touted as one of the great safety advantages since you will be safer in an upturned hull than a life raft. Some have even said that they don't need a life raft because their boat can't sink.
Mark is simply pointing out that, although it didn't sink, you probably won't be very comfortable or safe either in or on this boat.
This isn't an attack on catamarans, just an eye opener when it comes to the myths described above.

Re: Charter Lagoon 440 Takes on water and flips
By the way, regarding 5 German,or3,5 Americans...few weeks ago I met at Horta a German guy,Andreas. He moored beam , to my cat. His first question was:"Guys, you left Flores after me,why came to Horta before?" The answer was:"no wind, motoring". German guy Andreas said:" I use motor only at the dock and,in channels". Than he explained, that moving his boat(monohull) from St.Marteen to Germany. Two times was at 60 knts and,two times overkeel... I realised, that my problems, arent the problem. Full respect to windlovers...doesn f mattee monohullkr multuhull,German,Russian,American...

Thanks Monte, I needed a good laugh like that this morning. I would say you are not far off what happened.
