Boat name - how wide is transom step?

Hi,

We are the proud, yet still somewhat daunted, new owners of a 2011 L450, and need to get lettering made for the boat name to be placed on the vertical aspect of the top transom step.

Not at the boat at the moment so no idea how wide (or high) that area is. If any L450 owner is on their boat at the moment would very much appreciate it if you're able to give it a measure and let me know.

Our registration requirements are that the letters of the boat name are 10cm high, but need to know how much width/height I have to fit them in so I can order so long.

Thanks in advance!

If I were you I'd put the name on the aft sides of the almas but that's just me. On the step riser it's essentially invisible from 270 degrees around the boat.

Regarding the hailing port, if you're referring to USCG requirements for the height, you can shade it down near 3" and be OK. A lot of people do that and I've never heard of anyone getting ticketed for not having it to spec.

Overall 135 cm but each end tappers from 17.5 to 15.0 cm usable height.

So a good usable Maximum Length would be 120 cm.

Mine, Like your picture has a Blue external LED mounted in the center that needs to be missed by the lettering. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks PaulinOz!! Much appreciated.

I did notice the small downlight which might add a further level of complication to the already tricky application process!

I would second the idea to put the name of the boat on the aft sides.

Re: Boat name - how wide is transom step?

I recently had my boat name printed in vinyl letters for the aft steps. The specification I gave the printer was that the space available was 120cm x 18cm however because of the light in the middle of the step the height of the letters would keep letter height to 10cm. The port name in my case was on the step below and I went for a 5cm height.
For what its worth the final dimensions of the sticker were 86cm x 10cm for the name and 25cm x 5cm for the port

I'd third it....

Depends if you want people to be able to read it or not I guess.

Mind you you do see a lot of boats with it on the transom where it is then obscured by dinghies, swim steps, etc... very odd.

Ps to my earlier post: my boat name is on the second and third steps. ( not top and bottom)

Thanks Blackduck,

That helps a lot! Must say I had thought I had to have the port name in 10cm high lettering as well, but it seems not.

Also Jersey registered.

Re: Boat name - how wide is transom step?

I based the sizing on the existing name and port name originally on the boat, and had the template made up to match so the port name is the same size (height) as was originally registered in Croatia (the boat name I refused height slightly given longer name)

Suijin brought up an interesting question about the angle of visibility. I doubt you would ever get cited for less than what may be required. A good question however.

Re: Boat name - how wide is transom step?

Some feedback on our stickers:

The boat name (Shantaram) was 891mm x 100mm, and the port name (Jersey) was 675mm x 100mm. The font was sans serif.

We were obligated to have a minimum height of 10cm for the letters as per Jersey registration requirements.

The small down-light in the centre of the transom step made positioning a bit of a challenge....as if trying to get a vinyl sticker on straight wasn't bad enough.

All completed successfully in the end though.

Thanks everyone for the assistance.
