You've made your case, now go & make a nuisance of yourself elsewhere.
It's not your advice but rather the way it's delivered.

Re: Trans Atlantic - June/ July 2013

NOAA is predicting a very active hurricane season whose development that may well be north of the normal paths. It may be worth taking their projections strongly into consideration. I would suggest you take a look at this blog by a retired NOAA hurricane forecaster, and possibly get in contact with him to discuss your route. The concerns that others have pointed out should not be blown off lightly, especially this year.

Hi avb3
Please understand I appreciate input from wherever I can get it. What I have a real problem with, is the way some go about it.

Re: Trans Atlantic - June/ July 2013

while it sounds like this has been already, you really should change a few of your plans.
if you haven't already gotten to nantucket, you are too late to go till november. (that means leave nantucket in november, not leave the carolina's) (or wherever you are)
if you want a crew, your gonna have to pay them, pay for the food and beer, and the airfare home. (you'll need about 4 people that have done this before, not a delivery captian and 3 guys who sail in the weekend race)
you'll need a couple weeks to get the boat ready, get the crew ready and get to nantucket. (not sure what you have on the boat, but anyone who is going to be able to do this safely will want at least that amount of time to get comfortable with the boat)
it's gonna take at least few weeks to cross maybe 4 and while sailing you tend to eat, so your gonna have to re-think your budget. (nobody wants to sail across an ocean eating rice)
it's still a good idea, just needs to be re-worked a little. good luck with it, and when you get to nantucket put up a post and i'll have a beer with ya!

Yes this thread is getting full of bullsh"t

There are many good crew who would love the experience without being paid.

Yes the northern route is still OK in July. read Cornell.

Jim, Gah and Ben it diminishes you when you just bald face don't know what you are talking about.

Get a brain and get off this skippers case.

Mark I didn't say it can't be done but should it be done by a skipper asking for crew and pointers on here when she is going to be off the us coast in july this just don't sound smart to me that's all I'm talking about, so help a newbie skipper to their death if you want, I'm not going to, I'm trying to help here should I be putting smilies up after each post?

Re: Trans Atlantic - June/ July 2013

Trish,

This thread originally got my attention because I was going to apply for a spot on your boat, but I just couldn't make it fit with my schedule.

However, in recent days, the topic has gotten more interesting. I originally dismissed the doom-and-gloomers as being unduly pessimistic until I did some research on my own at NOAA.

You might want to take a look at their website and check out the dates of the tracks of the following recent tropical storms:
Cindy 2011
Cristobal 2008
Chantal 2007
Alberto and Beryl 2006 and
Franklin 2005

Finally, I suggest you look at the 2008 track of hurricaine Bertha.

All of the above tracked accross your intended path in the time frame of your passage.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you fair winds.

Re: Trans Atlantic - June/ July 2013

Trish, I really feel for you; that a simple request for a willing crew would bring such provocative comments from idiots who have nothing better to do than launch b.s. I wish I was able to sail with you - I'd gladly go. If you are ever in the Jax/St.Augustine area please shoot me an email. I'm looking to start sailing and have been studying everything I can get my hands on. I've built my own house and cars and a few small boats; I think I can learn to sail in short order. I'd trade any expertise you can throw my way for whatever talents I may have to assist. Good luck in you endeavors and bless you for keeping a civil tongue when faced with addressing such ********.
