San Diego day sailor... crew for experience.

I am 25, just entered Navy Reserves in NOV. Wanting to find Day/weekend sailing opportunity. Hard worker, financially independent and ready for adventure. Curious if there are any experienced sailors in SD area that wouldn't mind showing a young guy the basics. Will help with fuel, food, drink, whatever. Available most weekends and some week days. I am teachable and eager to learn as much as I can before I buy my own boat. Thanks in advance for any advice or invitations.

Kindest Regards,

AA

Look into Fiddlers Cove on the Strand south of Coronado. They offer very inexpensive lesson and boat rentals for Military personnel. Incredibly affordable.

Phone: (619) 522-8680

As a navy brat who was born and raised in San Diego and Coronado I spent all my free time and allowance sailing boats from here. I can't think of a better resource for you to take advantage of while still enlisted. It costs a fortune to rent boats and take lessons in the real world.

Give them a call!!!!

Re: San Diego day sailor... crew for experience.

When I was in Pensacola I took advantage of those MWR sailing classes. They had a beginners course (naturally) which was literally the best one in my opinion, sailing the little Sunfish around really gives you an incredible insight into the fundamental skills of sailing. I did however go as far as their " MWR Advanced Sailing" which does permit me access to MWR sailboats worldwide.

Do you know of they offer any cruising courses or certs? Perhaps larger boat handling? I understand there really is no substitute for getting our there and doing it, but I don't want to throw down 10k on a boat and see it go to waste because I actually didn't know what I was doing.

Thanks for your reply,

AA

i second fiddlers cove for anyone military--less pricey than normal folks places and is all military retirees and many actually SAIL...... go see and sail with folks--dont need a card to enter grounds.

just drive or bus down strand from coronado or to coronado from imperial beach and you will see it easily on bay side almost half way down/up strand.

Back in the 70's I took my first lessons in the little cove next to NTC and did go on to rent boats out of Coronado.

For the record, this is the best help I've received since PCS'ing out here. Thanks for all the advice.
