Need Someone to Show Me the Ropes

Hi All,

If everything goes right, I am buying a 35 ft. catamaran this weekend. I had an 18 ft. Solcat many years ago, and had a great time on the lakes, but I know sailing that is nothing like sailing on a 35 ft. in open water. What I'm looking for is someone experienced with cats that would like to do some sailing in the Texas Gulf area, and teach me at the same time.

Thanks....Jeff

Hi Cap and welcome aboard. Good luck with your search for a teacher. Good idea to get someone on board with some skills.

Local sailing clubs always have boatless people looking to get aboard. Finding a reliable person who actually knows something can be a challenge.

Hi, Jeff.

We have a bunch of members here from Texas. It might help to let them know exactly which port you'll be sailing from. Good luck with your new boat!

Well, that's a way of doing it, and not one without precedent. If anyone tells you how you should have done things differently, just nod and smile.

Best of luck, keep us posted with both the good and the bad.

Need Someone to Show Me the Ropes

Hi All,

Well, the survey and sea trial went well; we did it Friday, 08/07. Quite a few minor issues with the cat, but nothing I was surprised about. It's an 84 model, so I expected there would be things needing repairs. Nothing that would stop it from sailing, except maybe the mast light; it needs to be replaced. On the way back from the survey we were hitting speeds of 8 knots, averaging around 6, I'd guess. It was a lot of fun!

I'm leaving the boat in Corpus Christi, I found a reasonable slip at PIYC.

Take care...Jeff
