Honolulu Sailors: Help !

I will be in Honolulu from Sept. 17-24th. I don't know any sailors there, but I would love to get some experience sailing in the ocean while there. Please, if you or someone you know is planning on day sailing during next week, please, please let me help crew.

I have only 2 years experience sailing in Lake Michigan, but I have to admit that what I lack in experience I make up for in enthusiastic interest and a love of learning to sail. I am entirely willing to help with rigging/de-rigging, or any grunt work in order to earn a spot on a boat. I'm a fun, laid back guy who can easily fit in with any group of people.

Please give a new sailor a chance to gain some new experience and hopefully make some new friends.

Thanks

Re: Honolulu Sailors: Help !

Hello there, Surfnsail. Welcome to Honolulu!

I have also been looking for sailing opportunities here in Hawaii. The advice that I've been given is to try to help crew during weekly yacht club races. It worked wonderfully for me last Saturday in Kaneohe, though their races are over for the year. I am planning to go Fridays down in Waikiki. You should join!

If anyone knows of other opportunities, I'd be interested too.

That advice needs to be narrowed a little because Ala Wai is huge. Go to one of the two yacht clubs. There is one each side of the canal. The crews head for their boats around 4.30pm.

Re: Honolulu Sailors: Help !

Itenarant Tom has done it and knows where to go. I've always had luck just patrolling the docks and watching for activities on the boats and asking to help as crew. Worked for me. Hard to do that at Waikiki Yacht Club but is easier over on the other side of the Canal close to Hawaii Yacht Club.
Oh, I don't encourage drinking while sailing but if you bring a cold 12 pack it usually helps you get a position as crew.
kind regards,

Generally if you carry a six pack of quality beer, you should not have a problem.

I raced out of the Waikiki Yacht Club this afternoon. Apparently showing up to crew on some kindy stranger's boat is a normal enough thing - they have a sign-up list at the door. I'm jazzed to go back next week. I hope to see you there!

Thanks everyone for the responses. I had a great time sailing the Beer Can Race on "Hi-Tension". This was certainly good advice, thanks all, especially Itinerant Tom, it was great meeting you there.
