Help in finding a boat to crew on

How would a guy with sailing experience, mostly inland, go about finding a boat to crew on for a few months in the winter. How do most guys who do this get hooked up other than hanging out on the docks and being tuned in to who if going where etc... or is this the best way. If it is, what docks to I need to start hanging out at?

What pitfalls and potential problems do I need to watch out for. Is it common for a captain to pay your airfare to/from if you are willing to crew at no cost for some months? Any other advice?

Thanks

No its not common for a skipper to pay airfare. Even on some race boats with experienced crew it is not common, the upper level sailors do get their airfare paid. Some boats the skippers will make the crew contribute for food. Some the owner pays. If an owner wants you to contribute for dockage or boat maintenance it is time to go find another skipper.

on the West coast Lat 38 has a crew party. Other than that it involves getting in touch with people at yacht clubs or other spots where yachties congregate who are going cruising. Good Luck
