This is essentially what other cruising boats have told me through e-mail. Of course there are special circumstances where services (like a mechanic) are traded instead.

Agreed that the cruising lifestyle is expensive. That's what makes it a luxury. It is also a choice and with that in mind it is hard for me to feel like anybody on a $200,000.00 catamarran is suffering any hardship. Maybe if the blogger you linked to would have bought a less expensive boat they would have the cash required to finance their dream. Charging crew to satisfy their whims doesn't garner any respect from me.

To each his own.

Hmm it seems we differ in opinion.... If you have some payed crew positions, I pretty sure the OP would love to hear about them.

Personally I don't judge person on their boat (or any possessions). I wait for the back story so I can understand their circumstances.

I would love to know the backstory behind someone who can afford a $200,00.00 boat but can't afford a measly plane ticket and some food money for Crew. That would be a good one for sure! Must be rough. They have my sympathy.

I like to sail. I recently volunteered for a Baja Bash with a couple on their $200,000+ boat. They kept me fed and watered, but I paid my own transportation on both ends of the trip. I had a blast.

I volunteered for about twelve weeks during this past year aboard a $20 million dollar boat, and enjoyed every minute of it as we sailed the West Coast. I may not be getting top dollar for my work (or any dollars, actually), but like I said, I like to sail boats. Can I sail YOUR boat?

$150,000.00 plus $50,000.00 refit equals $200,00.00

Plane fare plus food, what's that? A tenth of a percent of the cost of the boat? Do you pay low bidder on all your jobs?

Ryon, I can tell you are a good sailor. I would be happy to pay you for your services and look forward to the opportunity. In my mind the money would be well spent. You are welcome on my boat anytime.

Personally I do all my own jobs, I don't bid them out.

You are coming across clear, you think people not paying crew are cheap. You also judge peoples financial position in life based on their boat (which may be all they own).

Your welcome to your opinions, I have mine. Personally I think someone's financial standing makes no difference whether they pay crew or not. If a delivery on a schedule is required, then paying is the only way to make it happen. Crew while living the cruising life is a holiday and the expenses go along with it.

P.S. Not sure where you got your numbers. His complete budget could not exceed $170K. He did not sped $50K on a refit.

This is an internet forum where opinionated get together to share there opinions. Maybe this thread isn't the place to explore this topic? I do think it is worth further discussion. I will try to craft an objective poll to explore this further.

No it is not my blog.. just one of the many I read.. I have happened to follow this one from the beginning when many on here said he was insane.

To be clear, you are defending a guy who posts a picture on his blog of himself on a beach in a hammock with his six figure boat (nit pick all you want about $150,000.00, $170,000.00 or $200,000.00 makes you look nebbish) in the background with the caption "not bad, eh" because you feel he is somehow destitute and deserving of receiving a service for free that most other would expect to pay for?
