Delivery: Sydney - Port Stephens

I'm looking for some help in getting Boracay from Sydney to Port Stephens.

I'm flexible about how it's done but my preference would be for captain/crew to do it overnight.

Rates/conditions/fares by agreement.

If any member can recommend someone I'd appreciate it.

Re: Delivery: Sydney - Port Stephens

hi mate, cant really recommend anyone, have done it myself heaps. its not a hard trip, duck up to pittwater hang out in the basin. When the weather is right leave early,5ish. if the weather turns you have some options in lake macquarie, newcastle (huge yacht club) then port. As you enter port head towards the port side and follow the markers.

theproblem with a night time trip is you will encounter a fair amount of shipping, especially around Newcastle.

Also, dont forget the current, it can cost you up to 5 knots of boat speed on a bad day, stay inshore, just far enough out that your not panicking about rocks the whole way.

enjoy the trip, its a great stretch of water.

Re: Delivery: Sydney - Port Stephens

Where in Sydney is the boat? Might be able to help out weekdays. Not weekends though. can possibly get semi exp crew if needed. I am a former inshore instructor, coxswains 1000's of hours. inc Syd-Hammo.. Coffs Syd.. Bass strait, Gladstone-NZ etc. .. Obviously she is an older boat going through a restoration. Is she up to speed on safeties, rigging, engine, raft, electronics etc?

We should be fully compliant with Maritime Services requirements. Rigging is old but looks sound, but we don't really sail.

I put the engine in a couple of years ago (85 hp John Deere) and have less than 300 hours on it.

No life raft but we have two dingies. Have basic radar, VHF, GPS.

Bottom was antifouled a week ago.

At the moment we're a couple of miles south west of the Harbour Bridge.

Hi
I live at Lake Macquarie and would enjoy the opportunity to sail from Sydney to Port Stephens. Been sailing for about 6 years, racing on the Lake and outside cruising, willing worker, and affable company, late fifties

Re: Delivery: Sydney - Port Stephens

Thanks to everyone for offers and suggestions.

In the end there was a good weather window so we motored up to Newcastle.

Those bulk carriers are hard to miss (and would be even harder at night). I counted 15 or so from Swansea to Newcastle, and then had to dodge a few coming into the Hunter River.

Yes they are quite the sight. I have seen them anchored as far sth as avoca. We cant get the coal out of newcastle fast enough it seems. I suppose julia has he mitts on the coal too most likely. It would be a shame to see them go. Not because i like looking at stinky old coal ships, but because they mean $$$ in the kitty of Newcastle and greater region.

It looks like you had great motoring weather. How long did it end up taking?

Re: Delivery: Sydney - Port Stephens

We left The Basin, Pittwater at 7:00am and were tied up in the marina at 2:40pm. Could have made Port Stephens...

I'm not sure what happened. We normally cruise at 1800rpm and get 7 knots, but we were peaking at 8 knots and instead of the usual 5 litres/hour we used 7. Could we have had a back current?

G'Day Boracay,

Glad that it has gone well so far! But, sorry you didn't come a bit further and join us in Towlers. It would have been good to have an eyeball.

Cheers,

Jim

Fantastic trip. Given that the EAC runs sth several miles out and assuming you hugged the coast, you may have ridden an eddy for part of the trip. But a 40% increase in fuel. Wow. Cant explain that one without using the word leadfoot lol

Re: Delivery: Sydney - Port Stephens

G'Day All,

In this area it is always useful to have a look atthe BOM website and check out the current patterns. They change on a daily basis, and quite often one will find a north-setting flow. We just had the unusual (for us) experience of riding such a current all the way from Eden to Broken Bay a fortnight ago. What a surprise!

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Delivery: Sydney - Port Stephens

Too right Jim. There certainly does appear to be a large northbound eddy between Nowra and Port MacQuarie atm. New South Wales
