Australia -> NZ -> Americas

hello everyone!

I'm Thomas from Croatia, at the moment living my dream called 1000 Days of Summer, been traveling for the past 9 months from Croatia to Australia, plan to spend couple of months here and then head towards east.

I'm a travel writer, so to speak, and I have been using alternative ways of traveling and writing about it. mostly it involves hitchhiking, couchsurfing, working in exchange for food and accommodation, etc.

I will be leaving Australia in November/December and heading towards New Zealand and after that towards Americas. the idea is to do that by crossing seas and oceans on a boat. thats why Im here

next couple of months I will be researching things about sailing, and from the things I read so far, this forum should be very handy.

does anyone know - what would be the best time to do the OZ-NZ crossing, and is there the "best time of the year" to do the Pacific crossing from NZ towards south/central/north America? I know its not the most popular route, and that most of the sailing is done westbound, but...

smiles from Down Under, T.

most boats leave nz for fiji tonga or vanuatu in april-may.

boats also leave darwin for indo malaysia in may.

boats leaving nz for chile generally try to do the trip in nov,dec and january.

any time there are flights daily!

the otherway round againts the trade winds is not a route that sailing yachts are able to take.

you might be lucky and find a yacht leaving nz in may and taking the great circle route to tahiti.

you might also be lucky and find a yacht leaving french polynesia in march april and heading north to hawaii,then on to the west coast of usa.

sailing routes are very seasonal,and weather windows small,taking into account the southern hemisphere winter and cyclone season,plus the predominately easterly winds in the tropical areas.
