Want To Buy: Yanmar SD50 Saildrive Units

You do know that you can just buy the cone clutch itself? Seems like a much more compact and inexpensive way to carry spares.

that is true but as sd 50 are so out of fashion, may be quite cheap to get. Worth a try i guess.

You might be surprised actually. I have an old Volvo sail drive. Out of fashion for my drive says tack on a premium!

I'd like a complete unit to act as a spare. There are at least 3 boats in my charter fleet, and they are all going to experience this over the next couple of years.

If I was going to buy a cone clutch spare, I'd want to buy the complete core -- because I want a unit that I can just pop one out, and pop another in. I don't want to have to do the lapping and restacking.

If I remember right, did you say you were in the Chesapeake area? If so, I am taking my daughter back to DC in August -- and would be happy to pick the unit up then.

I'm willing to pay $1200.

Can you tell me how long it took to get SD60 units, and what you paid for the complete unit?

The sd60 is a stock item at Mastry in St. Pete FL. It believe it was just over $5000.

I have one complete unit with less than 500 hours. I had one fail and replaced with the SD60. Yanmar has discontinued the SD50 and spares have a long lead time and are priced to " encourage" the buyer to upgrade.
Let me know if you are interested, how much you are willing to pay and where you are located. I am in Florida, West Coast

When did you replace with the SD60, and do you feel that you are going to have less problems with this going forward?

I would be willing to pay $1200 for entire unit and leg. I would need to have it shipped to Warwick, RI. Do you have an estimate of the pounds, and would you be able to properly pack it for shipment?

I replaced it 10 month ago. I have a catamaran and one unit developed a clicking noise in the gears and eventually cratered. Yanmar did not honor the warranty although I sent the complete unit in for analysis. They claim unless there is a material defect warranty will not apply.
The cost to repair was in excess of the SD60 and two month delivery.
I bit the bullet and upgraded as it will be increasingly more difficult to get spares and I have a long cruise planned.
Until now, I have kept the good unit as a spare and have everything on board to change out whilst afloat using airbags.
I am undecided to sell or keep for spare. A replacement unit goes for around 6k plus and you would be getting it for 25% of replacement value.
Shipping would not be a problem and I can handle the packing.
You may want to consider upgrading yourself?

If you are asking me? My boat was hauled against my express wishes. They removed my transmission even though I told them not to.

wcrosby - my question was to "woc" about his experience in pulling the saildrive out of a cat using float/air bags. Sorry, should have made it clear who the question was addressed to.

Given the difficulty finding a travel lift that can handle 26 ft beam in my area I invested in four 6000 lbs each lifting capacity airbags from a salvage company.
For changing out the sail drives on my Lagoon 450 I place three of these bags on the aft side between the hulls and inflate with my Brownie Diving compressor.
This is enough to lift the stern of the boat high enough to bring the mounting base of the sail drive above the waterline. In this mode, I pulled the sail drives on both sides and replaced them in a few hours.
A 4x4 wooden beam is used to place across the engine hatch opening to lift and hold the engine in place during this process. The sail drive is light enough to man handle.
Considering the cost of a haul out I paid for the airbags in this operation and carry them onboard for any emergency, grounding in remote places etc.

WOC. Thanks for the info. I was looking at just letting water flood the engine room (after lifting the engine above the "flood" line. Fortunately the AC unit and all other important items are above flood level. The bags sound like a better alternative.

Have a Lagoon 470 with the same beam issues. Have a couple more questions for you.

What did you have to pay for the bags?

What PSI do you need to inflate them? I have a regular 100 PSI compressor on board for my hooka and guessing that might work (although only 3 CFM so would take a while).
