Hi
Will be arriving back at Aktio early May and need an inflatable. Ideally 2.7 long. Can anyone help?
Thanks
Pat

Re: Wanted to Buy Inflatable Dinghy in Greece

Hello,

I also go to Preveza early May. I suggest you contact any of the shops mentioned in the following thread specially the first one. Nikos is the owner and he is a fine person. He specialises in life rafts and inflatables boats.

Re: Wanted to Buy Inflatable Dinghy in Greece

Two years ago I needed a new inflatable and after looking at a couple of places in Corfu and found that I could buy a better dinghy for less money from England including shipping to the marina in Greece.

I suggest that you research online and get prices before you get to Greece, try the local stores when you arrive and then feel god about ordering online.

Btw don't waste your time looking for Greek web shops because they are useless.

Hi Vladis
Thanks for your suggestions and we may end up buying a new dingy. But we will look for a used unit first.
We did buy a new one in 2014 and it "died" mid season 2015 ! It suffered a complete separation of the tube floor joint along one side. On chasing a guarantee replacement I have been "stared down".

Hi Hoppy
Good advice and the VAT is a little lower in UK.
Do you have any experience in taking delivery of a large item imported into Greece? I mean Customs or other problems. I realise it should be easy as VAT has been paid.

Hmmm let me see..

Main & Genoa - UK
Code 0 & Selden bowsprit - Sweden
Hondwave 2.4 Dinghy - UK
North G2 and Yamaha 6hp - Sweden
Watermaker - Germany
Windgenerator - Germany

No problems getting those deliveries at all as they all came from within the EU.

I am currently shopping for a new liferaft and will not bother asking prices within Greece.

Vat is not a problem for the pricing, it's the Greek idiotic business mentality

Greece possibly have one of the highest number of yachts in the and almost certainly the most charter yachts, so chandlery suppliers should have massive turnover and combined with low staff costs compared to northern Europe, they should be able to offer competitive pricing and with well marketed internet shopping, they should be the go to place for yacht owners.

Instead they are lazy, happy live of lower sales volumes because of higher prices and I'm guessing that cash sales add the cream to the owners pockets.

The company that looks after my boat has a fleet of charter yachts and they buy in a lot of gear from Germany (owner is German). One UK charter company fills up a small truck over winter and drives it down to Lefkas when they start getting their fleet ready for the season. This is probably repeated by all foreign owned charter companies in Greece (if they are smart)

As well as UK, also look at German sites. A few of them have English language option on their sites. They seem to be the most competitive priced countries.

Re: Wanted to Buy Inflatable Dinghy in Greece

Hoppy thanks for the detailed reply. I am guessing you are setting up for a longish trip and also guessing in a westerly direction. Ya do not need all that kit in the Med. My Hobart boat has most of that kit. For Pacific voyaging.
So if I get a dinghy sent from Germany or UH, do I just have it addressed to me care of say Aktio marina...and it arrives?
I do not know what it is but Greece worries me a bit in this regard only. Unusual supply details sometimes. I guess I am still hurting from my last dingy supply.
Importing from EU to Australia is a breeze!
Thanks again

Pat

That was the original plan, until I met a woman

Just contact Aktio and check with them about what address to use. I always address to package to my boat's name at the marina.

What brand did you buy last time? I assume you bough it locally?

Re: Wanted to Buy Inflatable Dinghy in Greece

I researched buying a new dinghy in Greece, Germany and UK. UK had best choice and price so bought there from Chas Newens Marine-Boat Hire-Boat Film Hire-RYA Training and had it sent out from there to me c/o Ionion Marine next door to Aktio Marina. The transport company was New Euroline h.tzallas@btopenworld.com and if you aren't in a hurry their charges are both reasonable and negotiable. I would suggest putting your name and the yacht's name on the paperwork and package to ensure it doesn't go astray. New Euroline deliver to Aktio so know where they are! Be reassured about customs procedures which the transport company will handle without bothering you. All they need is a commercial invoice.

If you want a used dinghy try Nikos Stamatakis at Ionian Marine Safety in Levkas, ioniansafety@hol.gr tel:+30 26450 25340. He speaks good English and IMO will not rip you off. Famous last words I know, but my experience so far is good.

Good luck,

Mike

PS. When you get to Aktio, call and say hello. S.Y. Carpathia, Ionion Marine

I bought my Honwave from Seamark Nunn.com Discount Marine Equipment They arranged shipping by UPS and it cost only £95 including insurance to Corfu

Hoppy
I can not remember the brand name of the dingy but it was made in the Ukraine!!
When I bought it Penelope had been stored at Katakolon for the winter and on return there I arranged through a local who is a yacht services type to get me a dingy.

Hello,

I agree on that. I made the revision of my life-raft with Ionian Marine in 2013 and, last January, Nikos came to Cleopatra Marina to pick up the life-raft again for the 2016 revision. He also took my 3D Tender dinghy to fix the rowing part. I will return to Greece next May and I expect everything is ready. I also ordered a new EPIRB from him.
