Wanted For Free: Wanted for free or for cheap a sewing machine

I'm looking for a used sewing machine good for canvas and sailcloth.
If anyone has a unit that dont want or not using anymore i'll be happy to take it .

Budget is low so cant afford to buy one for a normal price.

I appreciate any help.

for what shipping would cost you can find a local machine for less. Goodwill craigslist salvation army etc have old serviceable machines for very cheap. Ive seen good quality steel drivetrain units for $5 at local thrift shops.

Cheap sewing machine are available at the places mentioned above but make sure they have METAL gears - not plastic !

Do you have to take them apart to see what kind of gears they have, or is there some easy rule of thumb?

Ive been looking around in town but no luck yet. I will check out freecycle and see where it goes.

Look up under the deck.

I fix sewing machines for a living.
You can find a good old Singer with a model number below about 600.
Don't bother with any Singer with a number higher than that.
Lots of old Japanese models from the '70's are pretty bulletproof as well.
