Wanted CPT wheel pilot

If anyone has one taking up space, I'd like one for a backup,
Cheers

Re: Wanted CPT wheel pilot

I've looked on fleabay and a few other sources and haven't found one either.
Are you looking for an old model or the new model?

Re: Wanted CPT wheel pilot

thanks guys, looks like I might have to buy new. I just want a backup system for our raymarine under deck. Hopefully it will stay in its box and never be needed..

Re: Wanted CPT wheel pilot

We have one as a back-up to our below deck Raymarine too, It's great for that and gives good piece of mind while ocean crossing. We bought ours on eBay a few years ago for $500 and just had it serviced for $300.... so keep on watching there.

If you search there was one sold on this forum, for $200 I think.
I didn't pay attention as to how long ago that was.
From what I could gather there was a time when they were produced by Scanmar, and some of those suffered from quality control issues. The new heading sensor is apparently accurate within 1 degree, where the old optical compass wasn't, and the motor is switched by Mosfet now as opposed to relays. So from what I can gather you are better off with the new model

Re: Wanted CPT wheel pilot

I agree with onestep, the ones made after Scanmar are better quality wise but if you can pick up an older model cheap cheap, you might be able to just change over the motor with the new ones they now offer.

Re: Wanted CPT wheel pilot

A64pilot is correct. Scanmar bought CPT and then pretty much abandoned it, about a dozen years ago. Jeff bought CPT from Scanmar and did a proper job of resurrecting a great old simple strong autopilot, as well as setting up a proper business model with great service and support.

Then he set about to 'modernize' the internals to make them more accurate and easier to use. The new CPT has all the simplicity and power of the old one so I expect it will be just as reliable. I dont think the units are interchangeable, so I dont think you can buy an old one and make it a new one. BUT, Jeff will rebuild your old one for a nominal fee.

If you call CPT he usually gets on the phone and will answer all questions. But he's gotten so busy the past year he does prefer email because he can answer them during breaks. I'm sure you businessmen out there will understand...
