Wanted: 38+ liveaboard sailboat, center cockpit, aft cabin

Wanted: 38+ liveaboard sailboat, center cockpit, aft cabin for $20k

Your expertise is needed! We are searching for our live aboard sailboat. For months we've searched the online resources, Indiantown Marina, Harbortown Marina - Fort Pierce, FL and neighboring marinas. Where else can we search and find our diamond in the rough?

Your salty sage is greatly appreciated.

We sold it all in California, are here to buy our sailboat and sail to the Bahamas and beyond. Mind helping out a couple dreamers please?

Much Aloha!

What is your budget? Are you looking for a project, semi-project, or a sail away? Any other items you "must have" on the boat?

$20k is our budget and we are willing to work on this project/semi-project. Good electronics on this live aboard would be great too.

Agreed, looking for the diamond in the rough and not the lump of coal.

I would focus more on a boat without major structural issues and forget the electronics. First on a boat in your price range you are not likely to find one with up to date, good condition electronics.

More important, you can buy the basic electronics you need for very little money. Hand held GPS for under $200 plus $100 for chart chips. VHF radio for $100-$200 depending on how fancy you want to go. Depth and speed for similar. What else do you need?

A couple of bits of advise on diamonds in the rough aka fixer uppers or project boats.

1. A cheap boat can cost you a lot more than a more expensive boat.

2. Any boat project will take twice as long and cost twice as much as you estimate.

NOTE: regarding point #2, the twice as long, twice as much rule of thumb is based on estimates by experienced boaters who have done this before. If this is your first big boat project it will be triple or more.

I know these may sound like boat humor but the statements are based in reality. Take it from someone who has done major overhauls on two project boats. The latest took me six years and just splashed a month ago.

Best of luck in your search. I'm sure others will say again, "You have to kiss a lot of frogs."

It would be a good idea to get your feet on the ground along the coast to marinas and storage yards where you may find something that's close to your budget.

When you find your diamond in the rough don't forget to have a professional survey done pre-purchase.

If you find a good 38 footer for 20G's you will probably put in another 30G's and a year of work to make her seaworthy.
Spoke with somebody yesterday who bought a radar/chart plotter/fathometer system with pedestal mounted screen for $1,700 new.

Re: Wanted: 38+ liveaboard sailboat, center cockpit, aft cabin

I saw one on Craigslist Bay Area last week, might be worth looking at.
All I remember was it was 38 feet, $16,000 built in 1965 someplace in Marin County. No modern anything on it.

Re: Wanted: 38+ liveaboard sailboat, center cockpit, aft cabin

You might consider an Irwin 37 - not that I can vouch for this boat, never been on one, but if you are looking for center cockpit, aft cabin, and low budget she may well be what you are looking for - plus there are many on the market (in FL). Here's a posting I found on Sailboat Listings just now: 1976 Irwin 37 Center Cockpit sailboat for sale in Florida

It was posted in October so may well be gone by now - price is right at $14.5K with a Perkins 4-108...maybe worth a call.

So true. I am halfway through a six year project. A wise man told me:"When it comes to boats, if you think it will take a week it will take a month; if you think it will take you a month it will take you a year."
Especially old boats.
People forget that you have to pay moorage as well.

Isn't it common "knowledge" that you can buy a 60k boat for 20k?

It must be true because I saw it on an internet forum.

There are some CC's out there for cheap but they are walkover models. Oday 32/37?
