Tohatsu 9.8 Long Shaft Electric Start

Tohatsu 9.8 2005 model # MFS9. 8A2 with probably less than 50 hours. The motor was going to be for the tender to my large sailboat but the sailboat was struck by lightning TWICE over three years. Four years of repairs later the boat was sold and the tender and motor sat on my seawall. Although it is difficult to see in the picture, the prop has barely a scratch and it is original. The cooling impeller has been replaced and a new coil has been installed and the motor is like new. This is a true bargain for someone.

Re: Tohatsu 9.8 Long Shaft Electric Start

I am going to reduce the price to $1295. This motor starts on the first pull, but who cares...IT'S ELECTRIC START!!!

Re: Tohatsu 9.8 Long Shaft Electric Start

And since it is made for use in the USA - I believe the motor should be a 4-stoke - Is that correct?
Any idea of the weight?

That's right! It is a 4 stroke and it weighs in at a svelte 84 lbs.

Re: Tohatsu 9.8 Long Shaft Electric Start

Based on what my last 9.9hp 2-stroke cost which I purchased in Trinidad at a discounted price of near to $2K - This is quite a good deal for somebody who has a dinghy that can handle the extra weight of a 4-stroke. I'm sorry I can't use it.

- - - -
Unrelated, but sort of close to the subject - - one modification I made to my sailboat which has a swim platform off the stern - was to bolt an outboard motor mounting pad to it. First for the purpose of being able to run, test, and adjust our outboard while at anchor. And secondly for safety purposes we could put our outboard motor on the pad and then run it like an emergency engine to move our sailboat should the main engine crap out. And we actually had to do that once at St Lucia.

Re: Tohatsu 9.8 Long Shaft Electric Start

This looks like a good engine at a good price, especially if it includes a fuel tank with fuel hose and priming bulb. A good used one is hard to find at a bargain this time of year because fisherman use them for trolling motors and new ones are expensive. Someone should snap this up, it should be nearly as good as a new one.

Is there a manual?

It would be a good idea for the buyer to water test it at full throttle under a load, check the gear oil looks good, and confirm the age of the impeller. I change mine every year or two no matter how much use they see (Yamaha 150, 70, 9.9, 8.)

Re: Tohatsu 9.8 Long Shaft Electric Start

Thanks for the comments! The impeller is new about 6 months ago and the lower unit oil is sparkling clear as is the engine oil. It has so few hours on it that there is no black junk even in the crankcase to turn the new oil even the slightest bit brown.

Re: Tohatsu 9.8 Long Shaft Electric Start

Just a vote of confidence -- we have the same motor, same year, with the extra long shaft, as the auxiliary on our 31-sailboat. It has been incredibly reliable over the years. For $950 this one is a crazy bargain.
