Perkins 4-108

We're looking for a good used 4-108. West Coast preferably. Just bought a boat with a 4-107 that had water in the cylinders for several years and we'd rather have ~50hp than ~40hp. We have a starter, alternator, etc. from the 107 so all the accessories aren't necessary.
Thanks!
Steve

If you care to search around the forum you will find that a 4-108 is probably never going to produce 50 hp, unless you want to run it at 4000 rpm. Why not a replacement motor, like Betamarine.

got one from michigan supposedly rated at 54 hp..lol.... usually more like 45 as opposed to 37, which is more like what a 4-107 puts out.
check craigs list, ebay and all the forums--i got lucky-- goood luck!!

In 2008 I was tired of my old 4017 breaking down every time we went out. I went to find a rebuilt engine.

I didn't feel I was up to the task of doing it myself and was distrustful of everybody who had a cousin who can do it 'cheap'.

Online I found an old German guy in Bayview, WI halfway across the continent. He was working on a 4108. He'd ship it out the next week.

It came by truck to the dock, I shipped back the old 4107 for the core the same way.

Aside from the week it took to remove and install an engine and the 6 weeks it took me to rebuild the Borg Warner transmission it was the best money I've spent in along time.

I still have to change the oil and add fuel, but the 4108 just keeps ticking away.

Ah, the HP rateing.

From the Perkins shops I have spoken with, the only diff between 4-107 & 4-108 are dry sleeves (4-108) as opposed to the wet sleeves. HP is not one of the differences.

As far as finding one, just keep your ear to the ground.

I bought two 4-108 long blocks once. $400 each. I was looking for one but couldn't pass up the deal. Changed out the 4-107 in my boat for one of them, and sold the other one for $1,200.

I've got a Perkins 4-108 Lowline in my shop here in Alameda, California; I pulled the motor to replace it with a Yanmar 4JH.

The Perkins is from 1983, has 4800 hours on it; it was running in September 2010, and then I noticed a dripping fuel leak from the high pressure fuel injection pump. Turns out the seal inside the injection pump is no good, and British Marine (Oakland) said it was a $1,000 rebuild on the pump - and that's when I pulled the motor. (I was planning to repower in December, turns out I started the repower three months early).

If you want the motor, you can have if for $900. It will require a rebuild on the fuel injection pump, everything else was working just fine.

I'll PM you as well.

3 months ago, while in San Diego, I replaced our 4 108 with a Beta 38... Best decision I've made in a while. Quiet, powerful and affordable!

We were thinking of changing out our 4108 a couple years ago and then started doing a little research on the motor.. seems there was only about 7% of the 4108s installed in marine use.. the remainder were used in everything from tractors to stationary pumps and in central america, trucks and other means of transportation..
Went into holt tractor in Stockton Ca. and asked about the motor.... he had about 10 of them on pallets ready for farm equeptment installs..
there are millions of them used everywhere, no need to replace with something else, when you can get parts anywhere in the world......

S&W will exchange or rebuild your pump for $450. You should be able to send it to any injector pump rebuilder for that.

$900 is a good deal.
