Re: Pacific Seacraft 34 Rain Dog is For Sale!
I would be interested. If you come through Okeechobee I am on the west side and have a dock you could stop over and I could see the boat. My number is 602 290 9899 Andy

This really isn't about the boat but me. Ever since my surgeries( brain tumors), my brain has disliked sailing immensely. My brain trys to reconcile the world at 20-30 degrees but it cannot. I can live with that if it wasn't for the bee stings, I get bee sting like shocks in my head when pounding to windward . Thankfully LOVE for the sea is intact. So we cruise very conservatively, wait for near calm conditions, and end up motoring to our next anchorage. We considered going with a cat or a big heavy mono with lots more waterline to help with the motion but a trawler became more logical.
So you see, for me it's not the journey, but the destination. Get me there so I can play in the sea all day. Thankfully my hubby is not adverse to trawlers, he likes the extra space to have friends and family over. He can go sailing on friends boats to get his sailing fix.
On the up side, we don't have to sell Rain Dog, we can just keep cruising the way we have. We need to pull into port to rebuild the cruising kitty, just thought it was a good time to make the switch.
Thanks for the kind words about rain dog. We are in Miami( guess I should of mentioned that).

Ocean Girl, I hear what you are saying and that will be our course of action in due time as well. I have MS, mild and relapsing/remitting. For now I am good with mild relapses that come at very long time intervals, but that pattern can change/accelerate at any time. I know that eventually it will catch up with me and I will need a much more stable platform. As long as that platform is on the water I don't care what the method of propulsion is. Good luck on your next boat, and I am glad that you are at least going to keep going and not let this thing beat you.

Your attitude is what separates you from many others...I've been through something similar and, for me, the post op "cure" was the most debilitating...took over a year to get back on an even keel. But you will adapt and accept what life deals you and go on, in whatever you choose to do, sail or trawler. If you can't walk you sit, if you can't sit you crawl, but you never quit until it's over.
I admire you, and wish you the very best...actually, trawlers are kinda cool with all that space from which to observe all the other boats.

Re: Pacific Seacraft 34 Rain Dog is For Sale!
Having admittedly limited time on both, I believe a Sailing Cat to be more stable in normal sea state.
Trawlers are great on the ICW, but can get rolly in small seas. I don't know of course if rolling is as bad to you as heeling or not.

We are going to look and charter cats, bigger heavier monos, and trawlers. I've owned a Gemini cat, a ocean Alexander trawler, and lots of monos. But this was long before my broken brain. The cat has a motion that my brain may not like, but we will try them. A longer waterline ( heavier) mono is not off the list either. I just think the trawler will win out so thought I'd get that out in the open for friends and family to absorb.
We need 2 staterooms with two heads as my mom and friends will be staying off and on. We want shallow draft to tuck up behind islands, and explore out of the way places( under 4 feet). We'd like to keep it under 100,000. The more money we spend the longer we need to stay and rebuild cruising kitty( boooo).
I thought once Rain Dog is sold I'd start a thread about boat suggestions. :-)
Thanks for the responses and support

OK, well, best of luck
I think I imagine what you feel, on a heel. I don't like it either, to be honest, although I get such a rush of endorphins from being under sail at sea, that that tends to get lost in the wash.
I would definitely look at cats. That twitchy motion you remember from the Gemini is less and less, as you get bigger than that.

Awesome boat at a great price!!!! I would suggest that you include the underwater picture in Yachtworld. I have never seen a pic like that in all of the listings I have looked at this past 10 or so years.

Re: Pacific Seacraft 34 Rain Dog is For Sale!
I think the ideal for those defecting to power eventually will be power cats rather than trawlers, once supply is up and price starts to come down. Easy driven and less rolly. We were just in BVI this winter and I was slightly jealous of them, their speed, and lack of motion. I also love the idea of trawlers for 30 years from now for me, but the thought of one in a quartering sea?? Uuugggghhh.

I agree. As a total boat whore, I love ALL boats, including trawlers. But I love power cats even much more than trawlers, exactly for the reasons you say. Trawlers, IMHO, need stabilizers to be of much use in a seaway, and I don't think that's the size range OG is talking about.
And the only thing wrong with a power cat is that it's missing a rig, and that's easy to solve, because most power cats come with the optional rig Which not only adds propulsion options, but adds even more stability.

Ocean Girl, I subscribed to your blog. What am I going to do now for photographic fixes of all things of the sea? Really love your photographic style. It has gotten me through many a depressing day...smile..Wish you the two of you the best always...and the little crusty salt of a dog...

We've never met but so sad to hear about your health problems. Hope you have a good sale (pun intended) and find the trawler of your dreams. Stay well.

Re: Pacific Seacraft 34 Rain Dog is For Sale!
Good luck with the new boat, whatever it turns out to be. After we sold the sailboat, we did 2 years on the Great Loop in a trawler and had a ball, with very little time spent bouncing around in the waves.
