Linear Drive online from Hodges
Marine on February 23, 2015 to replace an older, discontinued
Simrad drive on my 42 foot sailboat. Unfortunately, this drive unit is longer than the old unit by a few inches and it doesn't fit in my
boat. I didn't discover that until April. Hodges
Marine won't accept it as a return because I'm beyond their 30 day return period.
The Simrad model number is 21113386. It's brand new, never used, but was removed from the box. There's a very small scratch on the
pump below the label, which is visible in the close-up picture of the
pump.

Smrad HLD2000 MK2LS Split Linear Drive - Hydraulic linear drive designed for boats with mechanical steering systems such as wire and cable steering (Edson, Whitlock, Teleflex).
Linear drives are the most preferred on sailboats. When attached to the quadrant or tiller it has direct control and slack in wires or cable is avoided. Several hydraulic models are available in the HLD range. They are all equipped with a bypass valve and need not be detached when steering by hand.
The HLD is a compact, assembled unit, consisting of a reversible hydraulic pump, a balanced hydraulic cylinder, by-pass valve and oil tank. Because of the direct connection to the rudder, the hydraulic linear drive can be used even if the hand steering should fail. This can be an important safety factor. The by-pass valve makes it possible to use the helm with little back drive force when the autopilot is switched off.
