Mount the separate control unit where it is easy to reach and see. The patented fluxgate compass is mounted separately for optimum performance. The LCD shows the pilot status and repeats up to seven pages of user-defined navigation data from your ST60 system. It is also equipped with the latest SeaTalkng networking and a standard rate-gyro processor ensuring razor sharp course keeping under any conditions.

The SmartPilot X-5 Wheel is designed for yachts with a laden displacement of up to 16,500lbs (7,500kg)

Darn! I wish this had been posted sooner. I just installed one and it is GREAT! I bought it from Defender 3 weeks ago. To all potential buyers: If your boat's displacement plus 20% is less than or equal to 16,800 lbs., this autopilot is rock solid in all conditions I've tested it and has very cool tack and wind settings for those of us who do a lot of solo sailing.

i am in the market but not sure I can be comfortable with a large transaction over the internet ... and although you are less price then a reseller, I wont have the same warranty and support...

hmmm.. I love saving a couple hundred but not sure I can handle the lack of security... / assurances...

let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions on how to over come these questions/issues

I bought a new Smartpilot X-5 GP Tiller on eBay for less than half of Defender's boatshow sale price. I was concerned about the warranty, but Raymarine honored it when a mounting tab broke off the fluxgate during installation. Raymarine was well aware it was an eBay purchase because I had emailed them to confirm some non-matching serial numbers were indeed legitimate.
