Unhappy My Cheoy Lee Needs an Engine

I recently bought a Cheoy Lee Lion 35 (circa 1968) equipped with a Volvo Penta MD2B motor. The motor has collapsed - terminal internal damage - and I'm looking for something with which to replace it. I'm anchored in San Diego and money is scarce. Any ideas?

Re: CHEOY LEE IN NEED OF A MOTOR

Is the Volvo repairable? If not, I would start checking boatyards in the area, Craigslist, etc for old engines. Lots of people repower old boats even when the old engine is still got some life in it. I bought a running Westerbeke W58 for $400 for spare parts.

Of course you might get a reply from the forum with an old engine.

Good luck.

Re: My Cheoy Lee Needs an Engine

I have a running MD2B with trans that is in good condition ( running ). The reason the engine was removed is that a larger engine was installed. Doesn't move the boat any faster than the MD2B did!

Re: My Cheoy Lee Needs an Engine

Thanks to all for the responses.
I'm interested in Peacetime's MD2B. it would slot right in and the mountings and propshaft would simply connect up.
Where are you physically and what are you asking?
Do you have any idea how many hours its done?
What is the general condition?
Thanks again!

Re: My Cheoy Lee Needs an Engine

The MD2B was a great engine. I understand they are one of the hardest and expensive to work on though. I've also seen quite a few that are salt water cooled. Maybe that was your issue? I forget the details as my last one was 25 years ago! Craig's list is a good resource. Unless an MD2B drops in your lap it might be worth the trouble to change to a more recent model; universal, kubota etc.
the other option is to pick up a 10 hp outboard and bracket, either for until you find the perfect engine deal, or permanently if you're not sailing off long term cruising....
