Monitor Windvane #076, rebuilt, needs latch for water vane - $1300 firm

Original larwyck monitor windvane serial number #076, made sometime in the late 70's, i purchased the vane from the original owner 3 years ago, where it had been in a storage locker for a number of years, he only had it on his boat for about 5 years...
i completely disassembled the vane and polished it and re assembled it with new bushings bearings, chain, gear... etc, from the cruising spares kit, keeping the old ones as working spares, as seen in the pictures. the bronze pinion gears are in great shape and show very little wear

only thing missing is the latch/hinge piece that attached the water vane to the strut... part 86 i believe

$1300 firm local pickup in south florida, will ship in us at buyer expense

The Monitor windvane frame is made specific to the type of stearin the boat has. Each type/make/size stern of a boat is different..

I purchased my unit new from their main office in Richmond Calif. in the early '90's. They had a 2 inch binder of specs for different boats. The frame including the "tubes" were built to the specs. specific to the page labeled Cabo Rico 38. I had the unit installed on my boat by a rigger. I had to send photo's of the completed installation including the position of the rudder in the water, to activate the lifelong warranty. I then enjoyed the unit until May of 2009, when I left my boat.

To suggest that a unit removed from a canoe stern is interchangeable with everything else is simply not true. Nor should a unit removed from a Hunter 42 be used on a Cal 27.

Re: Monitor Windvane #076, rebuilt, needs latch for water vane - $1300 firm

The monitor vanes are all the same from a specific production run. The only difference is how they are mounted to the boat. That's usually with four 'C' brackets and the proper lengths of tubing. Scanmar has info on a ton of boats and can sell you the right length tubing precut or just the tubing for your own hack saw work and or any brackets that you might not have. A Monitor Vane for a Moore 24 is the same vane as the one for a Swan 48. One size fits all, only the length of tubing and how the tubing is connected to the boat are different. Not to say that some boats may have some idiosyncracies in how the vanes are mounted but the vanes from that series are all the same. For almost all boats with a transom it's the same 'C' brackets and different lengths of SS tubing.

The Monitor vanes have had quite a few changes to the various gears, etc. over the years. They are billed as improvements to the design but don't know enough to make a recommendation. Had a circa 2000 vane that had bronze gears, think they later went with SS gears. Don't know what all the other changes have been. This one is a Mark I variety. Would want to contact Scanmar to be sure the missing latch is the same as current build or that they have missing part for this Mark I vane.

Do you know the name of the boat it was on or the outfit you bought it from?

somebody this vane. As long as the latch is available from Scanmar it's a deal at a $1,000. If I din't 2 or 3 vanes from various manufacturers lying around, I'd buy it.
