Re: Monitor Wind Vane and Mounting Hardware
I recently purchased a used Monitor and all accessories. Not included in the shipping cost was the actual U brackets that mount to the transom. I had it boxed and shipped from Marathon FL (in the Keys) to Beaufort SC. My cost of $250, included having the UPS store do all of the packaging as well as the actual UPS cost of shipping. The Boxed Weight was 90-lbs. When properly packed, the box was quite large at: 21-inches x 24-inches x 48-inches.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for the info on shipping. We (and the vane) are now in Nassau Bahamas headed for Florida this week. The vane is still available.

If you could provide a couple more close up photos I would appreciate it. Where will you be in Florida? Cheers

Definitely. We are likely to cross the gulfstream from the Bahamas tomorrow for Fort Lauderdale, and then work our way towards Pensacola. I will take a few photos when we are stopped and send them your way.

Here are a few more photos and I will add more. The wheel adapter, air vanes, and there is a small dent in the oar (about the size of a quarter as the picture shows). The dent happened prior to my ownership, and the crash tube is unhurt.

Okay everyone. Let me know if you would like to see anything else. I've received several PMs and I've tried to answer all of the questions. If I've missed anything, please let me know. Here is what I do know:
I bought the vane on its return from a trip to the South Pacific. The owner sold it as like-new, but it did have the ding and a little surface rust on it. The condition is essentially unchanged, though I would not describe it as like new, but rather used and in good condition. We ended up installing but not using the vane on our cruise for the past year and a half. We didn't make the anticipated ocean crossings and for short hops it wasn't needed. There is very little that can go wrong with it though and it is very, very tough.

Wow...that's surprising to me. I just installed a Hydrovane on mine in January. Brought it back to Cayman from Rio Dulce end of February. Took me a couple of hours to figure out the basics...going to take a bit longer to figure out the nuances.
But I set it working the minute the sails are up, the boat's balanced, and I don't have to deal with buoys, boats or shoals. I even used it for the 7-10 mile trip from check-in at George Town around to the North Sound channel.
I'm just the Captain, but after the trip from Roatan to Grand Cayman, the Admiral said she thinks it's the best thing we've bought for the boat...but then she doesn't like to drive AT ALL. She'd prefer to go forward in a gale to putting her hands on the wheel in a quite harbor...
She used to do foredeck on J24 Women's circuits...comfort zone, I guess.
Guess I'm getting lazy in my old age...
But someone is going to be happy when you unload it.
Good Luck. Looks like you're getting to areas where you will find it easy to sell and get it to prospective buyers.

Our autopilot seemed to keep up and with the davits we couldn't fold the oar up, we would have to remove it every time, so it really didn't get used, but I do have mixed feelings on selling it. There are times when it would have been really nice, but usually they were in conditions that were not conducive to setting it up with our davits. I think they have to be one of the coolest sailing toys money can buy, but after a year of cruising we need money more than a tool I never fully got around to setting up.
Without the davits we would have probably used it, but I think you are right, someone will be very happy to have it. It is in good shape and new they cost about $5000 plus taxes, accessories and such. Now we need money to send the boat back to the Pacific Northwest and the SSB is already sold.

Re: Monitor Wind Vane and Mounting Hardware
Different strokes...
My steering is Hydraulic...and the Garmin AP does a reasonable job, but being electric/hydraulic, burns up a lot of juice. Seems especially so downwind where the wave want to push her butt around. just had to have something that was non-electric. Still use the electric AP in port/close quarters, but just didn't work offshore.
And with the Hydrovane, there isn't a "fold-up" option. It's just one pin to pull to take of the rudder. Among about 10,000 other things going on to get ready to go for a year, I just installed a "swim platform". Well, that's what they called it when i bought it. I prefer to think of it as a boarding platform.
Again, good luck. Think you're getting to a place someone will be seriously interested

Our pilot doesn't work great downwind either, but unless we strip the davits off, there isn't a good way to make the vane convenient.
