Mercer 44

Looking for a Mercer 44 that sailed from Ct to Alabama was hauled out and placed on a trailer and shipped to Los Angeles area 3 years ago. Her name was "WINSOME". If you know of any Mercer 44's on the West Coast, NOT the 2 that are currently for sale in Florida and Virginia, please contact me or add to this thread. Thanks, Lodbrog

Re: Mercer 44

Beautiful boats. I almost purchased one about 8-10 years ago, they were asking 100k, a bit out of my budget and she was just too big and a little down on her luck. I still don't know if I should be sad or grateful I did not adopt her.

You are probably aware that one was destroyed when a car crashed into her while on the hard in her owner's yard, knocking her off the stands and crushing the hull beyond economical repair. I recall that was in New England somewhere.

My uncle, Bill Caldwell, formerly owned "Spirit", #6, which has been for sale in the Chesapeake for quite some time, although she is not officially listed anywhere I am aware of. My guess is the owners have high expectations about her value. I believe she is the Virginia boat you mentioned.

The mercer44.org website does not seem to have been updated for quite a few years unfortunately.

A USCG search for documented vessels named WINSOME shows this one, with a length of 35.9 which matches with other documented Mercers, a build date of 1966 and a former name of SUNDOWN. Bingo!, but a Newport RI hailing port and a Rye NY owner.

Re: Mercer 44

Thank you John, I will try and contact them this morning. I tried your number from the directory but to no avail. Do you remember what boat and where the one was that you passed? How do you like the Bristol? Am currently looking at a couple of boats: A Hood design and a Luders. Nice boats but am a bit fearful of the age and airex cores which bring me right back to the Mercers ( the early ones) that are a good solid one inch thick plus. A couple that I have looked at have some delam issues. I have always had old wooden boats prior to WWII. No mysteries. I prefer to spend more time sailing then being married to the brush. d

Re: Mercer 44

She was located in Sarasota/Bradenton FL area, I think she was Wandering Aengus. Pretty happy with my Bristol. She sails quite well and is the CB version.

Re: Mercer 44

Saw one in Martha's Vineyard last summer. Such a pretty boat.

There's a pearson invicta for sale in the Great Lakes. Looks somewhat similar to me. Not an expert. Another beautiful boat. Cheaper.

Re: Mercer 44

I believe it was dark blue hull, gleaming white topsides, bristol condition, yawl. I believe it was out of Marion, MA.

My guess is it's this one:
