Re: Manual anchor windless

Good luck in your search and just a word of caution. Make certain you find one that has the chain gypsy that fits your chain otherwise you'll be shopping for chain too. Its good if you go look at a windlass that's for sale to take about 18" to 2 feet of your chain with you so that you can fit it to the gypsy to see if it works properly.

For example: ABI windlasses for the most part are 3/8" Proof Coil chain compatible and most cruisers carry 3/8" BBB chain. The BBB chain does not fit the ABI gypsy.

kind regards,

Re: Manual anchor windless

skiprjohn -

your advice about bringing along a length of chain is spot on.

but you're spot off on the abi windlass. my 1979 abi was originally fitted with a 3/8" bbb gypsy, and i've used it that way for the past nine years. also, in my old abi catalog it lists the available gypsies and bbb is one of the choices.

Re: Manual anchor windless

i have a simpson lawrence seahorse that i removed from MY ASW II ketch over the summer ;-) , so you KNOW it's appropriately sized. it worked well, but i figured i'd be a masochist and install a vertical windlass instead, DURING last year's cruise ;-)

i'll take a couple of pictures for you shortly

Re: Manual anchor windless

I didn't mean to say they were all Proof Coil just the ones I've run into lately. ABI aren't made any more and parts and gypsys are not available. If you can find one that fits your chain they are a great machine.

kind regards,
