Question Looking for 6hp outboard, Nissan, Merc, or Tomatsu

My 6hp 2 stroke Yamaha has many hours on it, and I am looking for a replacement.

I am looking at the 20" shaft version of the Nissan, Merc, or Tomatsu [sic: Tohatsu] motors, they are all 3 the exact same motor (just different decals) mfg'd by Tomatsu.

West sells the Merc for $1599, I have found the Tomatsu online for $1265.

I wonder if anyone knows of any (gently) used, or any Pensacola area dealers that are easy to work with? (I priced the Merc at a dealer in NC, he refused to come off the $1800 list!)

I would also be interested in a deal on a good used 6hp yamaha 2 stroke (8 has same powerhead) if I came across one.

Tohatsu makes ALL Nissan outboards and many smaller (< 10HP) Mercury* outboards.
You’ll pay a slightly higher premium for the Mercury or Nissan branding, but here is no difference in features, warranty, etc. Parts and manuals etc., for the 3 brands, are universally* interchangeable.

* At one time, a "detuned" Tohatsu 5HP was also marketed as a Mercury 4HP, so make certain you know what you’ve actually got, prior to exchanging parts.

I love my 6HP Tohatsu 4 stroke. It weighs 57 pounds. It has started effortlessly at the beginning of every season since I bought it, for about $1100 five years ago. It is quiet, smooth, and smokeless. It planes my 9'6" inflatable keel roll up to 12 knots with #300 aboard, and gets up to 16 knots on the Igloo-cooler style Water Tender 9'4", which is a pretty wild ride. I've used it to push heavy boats into a slip, and to haul a chain rode into high winds and choppy waves. I take care of my engines, and wouldn't be surprised if this one lasts a decade longer.
