Oh the innocence! The purity! The naiveté!
MM, after somebody drops that free boat on you, you'll be pleading with the Universe to hit that Lotto! You'll need it. As you will see, sometimes "free" is too much.

aaaah! but think of the hours of satisfaction you will get from crawling in the bilges, gettin covered in fiberglass, scraping flaking paint, rebuilding the galley, replacing holding tanks, ameuter motor mechanics.........the list hardly touches on the joys of boat rebuilding

Missing these joys is another reason to feel bad for rich folks.

Re: It never hurts to ask..
The boat doesn't even need to leave the dock, so most of the work will be just interior cosmetic fix-ups at least for now. The boat is to function as a refuge and home away from home, so some hard work and learning about the boat is just part of the whole picture. With the decline of the West coast fishery here in BC over the years, there used to be many older wood fishboats available for little or nothing, and some are still around for cheap, although they leak like crazy if out of the water for a long time.

Re: It never hurts to ask..
Might want to check around some of the marinas in the California delta and Delta Loop, many a house boat for sale up that way, Lots O power boats too. Could even rent one for a week. Should be something up that way you can find.
Berkeley Marina has lien sales on boats a few times a year, check their web site.
BTW, most of the guys and girls here are pretty interesting. Oh sure your going to get some good hearted kidding and once in the while a troll or two. But your getting responses from people here from all around the world and all walks of life. I really don't know another forum that has such a wide range of truly interesting people.

She is trying to get away from God Awful Sacramento, otherwise I'd suggest the sac delta where rent is cheap and cheap boats aplenty.
$500/mo slip rent in the sfbay pretty much makes this request for free boat to live in highly unlikely, unless she wants to anchor out in that place where nobody is supposed to anchor out in..

Good advice. Finding a houseboat may be well nigh impossible, since they are limited here in the Bay Area to the north end of Sausalito. There used to be some in Berkeley, but I haven't been in there in quite some time. Wouldn't hurt to look though.
A used cabin cruiser sounds like a good idea. Usually have good space, sometimes sliding doors to the aft deck, and two berths for your and your kids.
Once you start looking around you'll get a much better idea of what's available.
Finding a boat in the Delta would probably be a lot less expensive than one down here on the Bay. Then you'd just have to make sure it's working to be able to get it here.
Good luck.
