Re: Ideal Windlass Model CHWSO

Hi Zenwood,
I am interested in your windlass. What size chain will it take and I am not sure of its size. I did google the letters and didn't come up with much. It lists Ideal windlass as no 1 thru 11. I need about a 3. Is it 12 volts?
Thanks, Ward

Re: Ideal Windlass Model CHWSO

I have one on my boat. The thing is a monster of a windlass. Very salty. People have commented that it looks like it belongs on a large ship. Anyone know offhand if there are replacement motors available for these? I actually have two (one spare) and the bottoms of the motors on both are rusted almost completely away.

Check out Ideals website, they have parts.

VERY salty indeed! My favorite comment that someone made on mine: "That's not just equipment, that's infrastructure!"

IDEAL does full rebuilds, even replaces the enclosure with a more modern version that encloses the motor as well (if yours is an early one like mine where the motor is outside the gearbox enclosure).

I just had mine rebuilt by a marine electrical shop down in Long Beach. They repacked the gears, rewound the motor, repainted the enclosure and polished the bronze capstan and wildcat to like-new appearance. I was stunned at how nice it looked when I got it back - my mechanic's assistant that brought it back up for me thought I had bought a new one! Not bad for under $500.
