re: Family Seek Help . . .

If your serious you should call the guy in Florida selling the 10meter Catalac in Fl. Under your price range and you would need a 44ft mono to match the accommodations.

re: Family Seek Help . . .

I love your healing plan. As a newbie I have found boaters to be a different breed of human, kind and hepful with nothing expected in return. What? Really! I'm from Chicago. This has restored my faith in humans. Lol Also laughed about alien entry. I, too, had 4 teenage girls abducted, with fiendish monsters substituted. One has returned from the dark side, the others are in limbo, but I'm hopeful. All came from wealth, went to college a bit, took a gap year to travel, have embraced poverty (really) and have healed ( from a terrible divorce/custody battle ). Seeing the world through different cultures is life altering. I now see facebook posts in which I feature as the super heroine, I was previously the confused, stupid minion or the actual mastermind destroyer of all things teenagers love. I just returned, from sailing the Bahamas for 3 months, a new person. My walk-in closet was the size of the boat. My teenagers are trekking and hitting the hostels, so they are meeting lots of other teenagers from difeferent countries and loving it. A few years ago the idea of sharing a curling iron horrified them!

So....I love your plan!
It worked for my family.
Good luck to yours.

If you're ever in the Tampa Bay, Florida, area look us up and we'll take you around.

re: Family Seek Help . . .

Just thought I would have a quick look to see if I had received any more posts . . . .
Thank you . . so much, all of you, for your kind words and some pearls of wisdom . . . .I must start with a confession . . . computers and I do NOT get on . . . it takes me two minuites to write one sentence . . . and do not even get me started on ' new paragraph . . '
Anyways . . I feel I can not express myself properly on these 'things . . '
I am sorry I cannot reply individually to each of your posts . . . if I was to attempt that, I imagine I could have circumnavigated maybe twice . . . !
So . . .
Seasick and Cwyckham are kinda on my page in acquiring the vessel . . . " where cruising dreams go to die .. " ( classic line, seasick ) I am swaying towards these boatyards, forming relationships with people ' in the know ', and hopefully picking up a great deal . . .
Hamburking and Kreef, I am not familiar with those markets at all . . .but would gladly look into anything you suggest . .
Dulcesuenos . . . I am not sure which guy or cat you refer to . . . if you could please clarify that would be great . .
Alansmith , irenepsyhogios . . . I hear you . . . remember, I am a bloke . . .they are psychotic . . . incomprehensible, mentel nut jobs - at times . . . but they are my girls . . . I would gladly lay my life down for either one, in the bklink of an eye . . . We are a very loving , open and caring famlly accompanied with a wicked sense of humour . . . that's how we get by . . .
So . . once again, I am grateful for all of your posts . . . I will return when I have a little more time - this has took over an hour to write ( seriously ! )
I do hope that this all leads somewhere positive . . .
Feel free to contact me, if you have something genuine to offer . . .

re: Family Seek Help . . .

hey jason

living aboard takes a lot of courage to do but once you've made the leap - thats it there's no going back

i lived aboard for 4 years and went about normal stuff but being out on the water whether on a mooring or on a hook just lets everything go and tranquilty takes over. you just gotta get used to not having "stuff" cos if you have "stuff" then you gotta have somewhere to put it.

i think that a mid 90's jeanau or a mid 90's bavaria would suit well cos most have 3 cabins so you'd all have your own space and they're easy enough to sail by yourself.

have a look at ex charter boats too -- like the sunsail ones - they're normally well equiped and sound of hull

really hoping you find something that'll take you places for a fresh start

re: Family Seek Help . . .

Just a little " bump " . . . (not sure i've used the term correctly . . )

If anyone could get back to me on the points i,ve raised that would be great . . . In particular the Guatemalan market . . .Are there any people on this forum that are there right now . .?

Also any thoughts on the Atlantic Clipper 36 that is currently being advertised on this forum - i've already received a lovely email from them and I've been trying to contact John at ' Eventides ' . . . Are there any owners of the same vessel here in the UK, who would like to get in touch with me - I would really appreciate it . . .

Thanks for your post ' Ruby Tuesday ', please can you or anyone for that matter , please elaborate on the ex- charter boats ( sunsail ? ) for me . . .

Thank you all in advance . . .

Jason

re: Family Seek Help . . .

the ex sunsail boats -- have a look in the classifieds section of Practical Boat Owner magazine most are Med based but cos they've been chartered and not used privately there's a lot of good deals around.

also try The Moorings - their boats are normally 3 to 5 years old when their syndicates sell them -- most of The Moorings boat are bought to charter through The Moorings group and every 3/5 years they swap them out cos the investment terms are over 3/5years - so you could drop really lucky and get something really substantial fully kitted for not much beans

i know of one other charter firm thats operating name escapes me at the mo that offer boats for sale when contracts expire.

think of a charter boat like a buy to let house with a 6 week "timeshare" facility built in -- this is the way The Moorings have it set up which means that all the boats are in tip top condition cos its the people that buy into the scheme that pay for everything -- trust me on this cos i had really good look at it and the figures were stacking up nicely - only reason i didnt jump was cos i bought "Ruby Tuesday"

re: Family Seek Help . . .

i had a few words with a good friend of mine about The Moorings boats and from what i got told there are numerous cats and mono's coming up for sale.

the majority of The Moorings boats are in the bahamas and BVI etc.... and southern states of the US.

All of their boats get taken away during hurricane season so that they don't get damaged too there are various versions of The Moorings boats too with custom layouts and other items included that you might not get elsewhere.

boats tend to be Lagoons, Bavarias and Beneteau's --- most are around 40ft and given that it costs around £85k to join the scheme and there are serious returns in it for people like me then grabbing a boat at the end of someones contract is prolly the best way to go --- speak to them cos they have a UK office they only say one of two things and if you don't do it and end up missing out on a serious bargain you'll be kicking yourself

like i said if i hadn't bought Ruby Tuesday then I would deffo have gone all in on one of their boats.

hope you find what you desire

re: Family Seek Help . . .

Touching story Jason, and good luck to you and your two girls!

My two cents: try an outfit called Grab Bag Sailboats Inc from Maryland, U.S. East Coast. They specialize in the boats and budget you are looking for! They've sold over 2,500 boats since 1983, so they know what they're talking about!

Fair winds and Godspeed!

Filip

I don't agree...I've been on one. If the the boat moves too slow (which is a lot of the time) the motor gets turned on to tack).

re: Family Seek Help . . .

Hello to everybody out there . . .

Just a quickie update . . .

Thanks ' Ruby Tuesday ' , I have explored the sites you mentioned and it has definitely caught my attention . . . Do you or anybody reading this have any feedback on the boats advertised on there . . . the main ones seem to be the Jeanneau Odyssey 36i upwards, Beneteau Cyclades and Oceanis . . . All thoughts, experiences much appreciated . . .

Thanks Filip . . . I have checked out Grab bag sailboats and will continue to do so . . .

For all you reading this post, that are at the boatyards, marinas everyday , is there a particular boat, you pass by everyday, whose owners are well gone and is in need of a new caring owner . . ? Especially one where I can strike a great deal . . . My six sense tells me this is where my ' baby ' awaits . . .

Finally . . . A 'heads up' on any good boat auctions out there would also be much appreciated . . .

Once again . . . thank you all in advance . . .

Jason

Just to clarify the £30,000 sum of money is for the boat alone, i have other funds put by for living costs . .
Ideally I would like to purchase possibly in the Caribbean or South East Asia . . .
I only suggest these areas as I have been told I might get more value for my buck so to speak . . Although I understand your caution we are well seasoned travelers . . .Also I will be traveling alone until I have secured the boat . .
Guatemala has been pointed out to me several times - any thoughts on that market . . ?
Once again I welcome any input , suggestions , pointers etc . .
Thank you all in advance . . . Jason
Welcome aboard and very sorry to hear of your losses. We will try to help as much as possible.

There are a lot of boats for sale in SE Asia. Many very capable long range cruisers fully loaded are left there as the owners don't want to take on the dangers of the Indian Ocean (often retired) and don't want to return through Indonesia against the weather etc. Malaysia is a country which is easy to live in for UK citizens, and requires very little in the way of visas etc. SE Asia in general is by and large easy sailing with the possibility of quite cheap living. There is a lot there for the girls. Not so much in the Caribbean. If I were you I would be looking at SE Asia for sure. Caribbean is much more expensive in general with less to see and do (from one point of view) and with less overall culture to explore and soak up (safely and cheaply at the same time), and certainly fewer in the way of younger people for you girls to meet. Look at brokerages in Malaysia and Thailand. I am going back there in October and can help vet craft if possible. Good luck and keep asking.

Aye,

S
