I have a 6" Sestrel Major compass and need the compensating iron spheres to allow use on a steel boat.
Thanks for looking

Re: Compass Compensating Magnets

I think the balls you are referring to are known as "kelvins balls" in most the world. They are made from soft iron.

Sestrel went out of biz some years ago. However I managed to get parts for my boat's very old sestrel compass from a company that has taken on Sestrel compasses. Don't have the details now, but if you think that contacting Sestrel may help you (perhaps even just the ball size / material) - I can try to find the contact info and provide.

Hi SteveA,
Thanks for that. I have tried Sirs in the UK who took over the Sestrel business but have not had replies on two occasions now. I know they have shifted their business again so maybe the contact details are defunct.

Re: Compass Compensating Magnets

As a matter of interest, my steel boat does not have the compensating balls. I am not sure how much difference this makes, although I know that quite large deviations exist on some headings.

Re: Compass Compensating Magnets

Hi,

Just did a quick search on Google and found "http://www.sirs.co.uk/"

They do say that most spares can be made upon request.

You may already have this info, hope it helps,

Simes
