Want To Buy: 35-40' Center Cockpit

For the past 6 months, my wife, 2 yr old daughter, and I have been liveaboards on our 33' Egg Harbor. We want to cruise the US East Coast and Bahamas full time, so we sold the Egg Harbor and we're in the market for a sailboat.

We believe a center cockpit would be best around the 35-40' range. We like the idea of an aft cabin for ourselves and the v-berth for our daughter. A bunked vee would be even better. So far we've looked at Morgan Out Island 41, Tanzer 10.5, Watkins 36, S2 11.0c, Endeavour 38, etc...

We feel like we've been looking all over and spinning our wheels a bit. Either the boat is already sold or its in bad condition requiring quite a bit of work. Does anyone know of any other models that may suit our purpose around the $30k price range? Any of our current models we may have overlooked?

Prefer not to buy a Hunter because of bad reviews, but maybe we could be convinced?

I also meant to add we'd like to keep the draft under 5' to help with the ICW and anchorages in the tropics. The aft cabin has to be accessible through the saloon as well and not through the cockpit due to our toddler being aboard. This rules out the O'day 37 and the early model OI 41's.

I was looking for very similar for my last boat so researched this size range for center cockpits pretty thoroughly. With a budget of $30K you are going to be severely restricted in your options. Also, odds are any boat for that price is going to take a lot of work. You might find a good boat, ready to go in that price range but would take a lot of luck, patience and being ready to jump on a deal before ten other boat buyers get in line.

We lived and cruised on a 34' center cockpit with our daughter when she was 1-2 years old and didn't have a problem with no walk-through to the aft cabin so maybe rethink that option to give you more choices.

I also cruised on a Morgan OI36 that was extremely roomy. Not as common as the 41 but they're around and usually cheaper. Also very shallow draft.

The deals are out there you just have to look around and decide how much work you are willing to do youself! We just picked up an OI 41 for $6k but she needs a years worth of work!
