Hello all,
We're offering S/V
Azzurra for sale as a truly unique and exquisitely historic vessel. Designed by Andrea Vallicelli as Azzurra II, the Italian Challenge for the 1987 America's Cup, she is a 12 Metre class yacht, converted after her AC debut to a cruising-capabale performance vessel. Boasting her original
mast and standing rod
rigging, although modified above and below
deck to accommodate shorthanded sailing, Azzurra is remarkably unique, and looking for a new home. Currently located in St. Maarten, she has had a very recent
overhaul of nearly all systems, including a 2015
Beta Marine 90hp
diesel engine (with shaft, strut, and J-prop) all new running
rigging and
backstays, improved sheeting systems,
roller furling headsail,
galley,
head, and
cabin amendments, and new
electronics,
autopilot, and fresh
water systems.
Currently able to be sailed shorthanded, Azzurra is unprecedented among fellow 12 Metre yachts, yet still maintains her stallion reputation and ability as a performance sailboat. In the last year alone, she has blasted from
Florida to
Antigua, and cruised the
Caribbean magnificently. While ready for an updated
paint job, Azzurra still stands proud and reliable - a genuinely capable yacht ready to be cherished under new
ownership.

Hull
Presently, her
hull requires attention to several areas upon which the
paint & fairing are peeling from the
aluminum (see photos). Built of solid
aluminum top and bottom, the
project to revitalize her
hull cosmetically poses a mild hurdle, and she is capable of shining brilliantly again with moderate effort.
Azzurra has a large wing
keel, with aft-mounted trim tab
rudder, and generously sized spade primary
rudder. Consequently, she is confidently handled in strong
weather helm conditions, with the trim tab controlled by an inner
steering wheel. Her rudder post,
steering cables, and trim tab shaft were serviced and inspected in 2015, with new turnbuckles and tightening, as well as u-joints installed on the trim tab shaft to accommodate her new engine.
Deck
Previous
ownership modified the
deck layout extensively from the original America's Cup 12 Metre
racing format to accommodate more comfortable and conscious
offshore sailing capabilities. Azzurra kept her
Lewmar 3-speed
jib sheeting coffee-grinders and
pedestal, but moved all
halyard, mainsheet, traveler, and running backstay lines into one tastefully teak-lined
cockpit.
She has
Lewmar 65 winches for
running backstays and Lewmar 48 winches for the mainsheet,
boom vang, and traveler. An
electric powered Quick
winch assists with
mainsail halyard hoisting.
There are numerous jib/genoa traveler tracks still present on her deck, however, her
current 120%
roller furling jib sheets to only one of these sets, with cars attached. A
Harken MKIV roller
furling unit was installed in 2015, with modified forestay deck attachment.
Accommodations
Azzurra was outfitted with a custom designed
interior for cruising by her previous owner. Moving aft-fore, she has a cozy
galley area to starboard, with fresh and
salt water at the sink, and pilot station w/ berth to port. Next a
single head w/
electric toilet & macerator to starboard, and fridge unit w/ prep station to port. Continuing into the main
salon, the primary
navigation station is to starboard, and another
single "coffin" berth to port. The
salon hosts a large table and couch settee to port, and single couch/day bunk to starboard. Continuing past the
mast and into the forward
cabin, a double bunk to port and single to starboard, with
storage below each. In the forepeak a spacious
storage area exists with
weather gear">foul weather gear rack, storage shelves, tool space, and sail lockers in the bow. New
LED lights illuminate the main cabin area.
Her engine occupies a sizable region forward of the
companionway steps, and a box housing the new Beta 90hp was constructed to serve concomitantly as table space.
Mast & Boom
Her mast is the original sans hydraulics, with the upper spreaders fixed to a conservative and moderate bend tension configuration. The original rod rigging shrouds are attached, and have been dutifully inspected and lubed regularly with no incident.
Her boom was modified to an aluminum custom size and design in the 1990s, but facilitates 3 reef points in the
mainsail. The
running backstays were replaced in 2015 by Nance & Underwood Rigging in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Azzurra has an original
spinnaker pole on deck, although presently she is not rigged for flying a kite.
Sails and Rigging
New running rigging for the mainsheet, jib sheet, traveler, vang,
backstays, main & jib halyards, and
furling lines were installed in 2015.
