For Sale: $0.45/lb Regalvanizing Group In FL

Jacksonville, Florida will Regalvanize anchors and chains - I'm going to drop off mine next week and have 1/2 their minimum which means anything you have to galvanize will reduce my expense. If we have enough we all pay $0.45/lb.

What's the minimum wt and how much do you have already? Have to measure how much chain I have left (had to cut both ends to get rid of some really bad links) but guessing 150-200 lbs.

Mind coming to Gainesville to pick up my chain?

Just noticed your avatar says Hernando Beach. If that's still correct then I'm assuming you would or could drive through Gainesville to get to JAX. If so, then my (humorous) request for you to pick up my chain suddenly sounds like it could be doable.

Metalplate Galvanizing (904) 768-6330 has a $321 minimum at $0.45/lb that is 713 lbs. I have a few hundred pounds at best. Once we get to the minimum it is $0.45/lb.

Yes, I can pick up ground tackle along the way from Hernando Beach to Jacksonville. We can either plan to meet there or maybe Metalplate folks will accommodate separate drop offs and we can consolidate and coat share.

Caveats: heavy rust (peel up with a knife) and paint markings need sandblasting which costs $105/hr. One week turn around. They don't have a tumbler or mechanical shaker (as in Virginia) so there will be a few links you will need to unstick. Otherwise they have a solid reputation and they are reportedly the only game in Florida.

I plan to go and drop off Monday.

Could you let us know about the quality of the product? (Still in need of redoing my chain)

I had concerns seeing sandblasting as the cleaning methodology and the lack of a tumbler to avoid welding (excessive material holding links together).

Bingo - though the staff are very good to work with and the ground tackle is now galvanized and looks new, for the most part, the quality is inconsistent. Most of the chain and all of the anchors look perfect. Some sections of chain appear to have been beaten or sandblasted after galvanizing as they are dull and rough. I imagine one long section came out stuck together. Several small sections of chain needed to be broken loose. One area of chain looks like the galvanizing missed or was thin. Overall, I think it is good enough and I only hope that in several years I will have used the ground tackle so much it will need to be regalvanized.

I had about 120' of my chain galvanized with Michael's project. I didn't examine it link by line but looked at it as it passed by when I rolled it back into the chain locker with the windlass. I didn't see any large or obvious spots where the galvanizing didn't take but I had to stop several times when a group of links that were galvanized together jammed in the gypsy.

So pretty much have the same opinion as Michael. Was kind of a down and dirty job but a good deal and a whole lot cheaper than new chain. If it will get me by for another year or three I'll be about ready for a new, longer chain rode.
