When we rebuilt the cockpit the panel to give access to the rudder stock head was put in with screws

Of course, subsequent to that while crossing the harbor, the key fell out of the the wheel shaft at the pedistal. So here we are with me buns-up in the lazarette steering by moving the quadrant by hand

.

It's been subsequently re-fitted with two easy to remove knobs.

1) I would have a bit of a conversation with the surveyor and,

2) I would replace it with spectra or whatever it originally was, and WRITE DOWN the method you used. Then take the notes along with a spare (you did buy enough spectra for TWO, right???) so that in a pinch, the next time, you will be able to replace it.

But, there's a reason why FP chose Spectra - and that's what I'd replace it with.

FWIW, knowing the location of your emergency tiller is of little use without the deck key to the cover plate to access the rudder stock on most boats. A deck key should be lashed to the emergency tiller. This can save precious time at a potentially critical moment.

The deck key on the FP's is any winch handle!

We test fitted our emergency tiller before we sailed the boat because I really like to know where things are and how they work. When I bought the boat I also inspected the steering cables and noted that they crossed over each other and there was some contact - I spent $12.00 on a double block to separate the lines at the crossover and reduce chafe. If you don't carry replacement cables you could simply jury rig a replacement with plastic Splicing Nuts SplicingNut...every line needs a secure loop

As to the steering cable, it is Spectra - and I'd stick with spectra for the replacement.

Jenneaus have the "winch handle" deck key too. I think it's a very smart design feature!

Also remember - if you have an aluminium access fitting you really need to lubricate it to prevent oxidation from freezing it solid. I had a deck filler that froze so solid it had to be removed and thrown away!

I use silicone grease but there are probably better products out there. Can anyone suggest preferred products?

The best (by far) dissimilar metal paste is called TefGel. I think you can get it a West Marine. It is made by a company Ultra Safety Systems (who also makes the best bilge pump switch in the world.

I built an aluminum boat with the stuff and 6 years and 10,000 miles later had corrosion only in the places the Teg Gel wasn't!
