Propellers

Hi everyone.

I have a Mahe 36 and want to replace the propellers. Unfortunately I cannot tell off the original Volvo Penta propellers what dimensions they are. Would anyone here be able to help? I'd be interested in:

Original dimensions for a 2-blade
Recommended dimensions for a 3-blade.

Thanks so much and regards!

Re: Propellers

At 10 hp per engine, those are not large props. Given the weight of the boat, they are finer pitch than you may find for 10 hp outboards. You want a power prop for 10 hp, not a speed prop. Your quickest route may be to take them or send them to your source for the new props - they will have no trouble identifying them, and suggesting a three blade alternative. If you want to do it yourself, here is an explanation of how to measure pitch given a sheet of paper, protractor, and simple drawing tools.

MANUAL PROCEDURE FOR PROPELLER PITCH MEASUREMENT.

Your goal is a prop that will load your engine sufficiently to keep it from exceeding its red line, or I think 2400 RPM for those engines. That way you're getting maximum power out of the engine without inducing flying connecting rods, which are messy to clean up.

Good luck with it.

Re: Propellers

Thanks for the super fast reply. The boat has D1-30 Volvo Penta engines with 130 Saildrives. So 30 HP per engine. I think you're right, might be best to find a local shop and have them measure and calculate. Thanks!

Re: Propellers

i'd be very surprised if the details of the props are not stamped onto the hubs. might take some sanding to find, but should be there

failing that : agree with rapanui - contact FP

cheers,

Re: Propellers

The standard two blade aluminum VP prop will have the dimension stamped in the hub, or the part number, or both. If only the part number you can easily find the size by online parts catalogue or google the part number. Typically to go to three blade from two blade, retain the diameter and drop pitch 1”.

Re: Propellers

Hi

My Mahe with D1-30/130 was initially delivered with 17x12 3-blade folding Volvo propellers. I found them a bit to small, as the engines would go 3100, and should stop at 2800. So I switched to 18x13 (same type), they’ve been working perfect.
