Re: Performance - 20 TWS - 17 Knots

The polars for a Saba 50 show it doing 12-13 @90-100 in a 20 knot wind. If you have those conditions and you're headed North in the gulf stream, maybe :P

Re: Performance - 20 TWS - 17 Knots

Odd... with 20 kt true one would expect a bunch of whitecaps, so this is already one dubious factor IMO. And then one wonders about the reported boat speed...

Truth in advertising? Maybe...

Re: Performance - 20 TWS - 17 Knots

I own one and have never seen anything remotely close to 17 knots. I don't have the same sail plan that boat was using and ours is heavy in comparison. I would say that if they actually did it, there had to be a strong current involved.

Re: Performance - 20 TWS - 17 Knots

I own the Saba 50, and had a Helia 44 before, both firsts in Australia.... The Saona 47 came out as a step in between..

And if I had to put money on it, I would say don't think so.....

Mind you, I have a HUGE Parasail that I would not fly without experienced Crew, and my Saba 50 was entered in the Hamilton Island Yacht Race before I owned it. Maybe, maybe with that parasail and the boat empty... Racing in sheltered water inside the GBR, maybe... But I carry ton and a half just in fuel and water, huge dingy on power davits, Honda 50 power tilt, 120 M of 13 mm chain and two 105 lb anchors, and a couple more tons I would have to unload before I tried that... So no to my experience on racing...

But again, don't think so on the Saona 47 with that sail as shown.. Maybe on GPS with a strong tidal current flow, but no white caps or white horses with TWS of 20 knots???? Maybe with 37 knots plus, and 20 knots apparent, maybe then.. But where are all the white horses at 37 knots.. And hell, nothing does 17 knots in 20 knots TWS but a light weight Hobie, and even then......

Best I ever did on the Helia 44 was 12-13 knots upwind at 35-40 degrees in 25 knots apparent, racing with Crew, white horses everywhere... Now I will admit I am just a slow Cruiser in my Saba 50... But judging from two F.P. one size larger and one size smaller, that Saona 47 is not doing 17 knots unless they have several knots of tidal flow with them, or have one engine on..
