New battery bank location in the lazarette?

All,

Without resorting to LiPo, (which I would if the battery controller / monitor technology were just a little better), I am having a hard time fitting a decent battery bank into the stock position in the starboard engine space.

I am considering building a battery shelf in the starboard side of the lazarette under / behind the cockpit. I would have to put in a conduit and 0/0 cable from the new battery bank to the existing switches and distribution features in the starboard engine space. On the other hand, the wire run from the solar bank would be shorter.

Other than losing some convenient ready storage, what am I missing. Has any one else done this?

Will not answer your question but what are you missing on todays battery monitors when using LiFePO4 batteries? The Viktron BMV-602S works just great?!

Regards,

Carsten

Batteries are heavy! moving them to the lazzarette could really change the boat's stability and how she sits on her lines.

In moving batteries you also need to consider ventilation. A surveyor will check for a vent system in a survey. Batteries are explosive when gassing (high charge).

My concerns for the relocation of the battery bank are are more of wiring, venting, fire-fighting, etc.

Moving them to the lazarette represents a relocation forward, toward the ship's center of gravity and lateral resistance and toward the center line of the ship. In other words, the relocation would be only good for ship's trim.
